When signing a contract, did you read every word on the contract?
Or did you let your lawyer guide you and just take his or her word for it and review it with them, but not read every word before signing?

I personally read everything. Mainly because I like to know myself if the lawyer is full of it.

i read every single word on ours.... but thats because i trust no one, never.... after speaking to the lawyer, he told the truth and everything was A-OK...
i highly doubt everyone reads the entire thing....

We trusted our lawyer (a family friend) and he went over the most important parts to make sure we understood and were okay with the terms.

I took my lawyer's word for it...he's my DH! 
Otherwise, if I were buying a house alone, I'd probably let my lawyer break it all down for me. Who knows what the hell those things are saying.

Our lawyer took us through each paragraph and summarized what it said. She then gave us a few minutes to ready over and see if we wanted clarification of anything.

Exactly. There is terminology on there that I don't understand. He's a family friend and was great to work with. The seller's attorney was a real piece of work so our attorney went though everything with us with a fine tooth comb.

No lawyers here in Texas.. They aren't invovled in real estate.
But yes... I read every single word. Found myself $500 no less due to an error.
ETA: What I didn't get, I made them explain, then if I still didn't get it we went through it again. I was a TOTAL PAIN but they respected that and took their time.  Hubby just signed and ignored most of it. haha

That's what they should be doing. I'm glad to see that so many people trust their lawyers but I believe that when it comes to a contract, you are paying a lawyer to help you interpret it but not to substitute his/her review for yours. What may be a red flag to you, may or may not be to your lawyer and vice versa. When I have clients in to sign documents it is a long appointment (I do not do closings but it's the same idea). I go over things pasge by page and I only take as many cases as I have time to do this for.

OMG I went through it LINE by LINE My copy of the contract was dog-earred and highlighted beyong belief. They kept asking me if I was a lawyer!
ETA: FTR I got a bunch of things changed that I didnt like (but that my lawyer didnt necessarily think were a big deal)...

I read every word, so did my husband -- and our lawyer did, too.
I'm a lawyer, though, and I read everything before signing. My husband also won't sign anything without reading and understanding it.

I read it all. But I also trusted no one in my home buying process and then had all sorts of extenuating circumstances so I read it multiple times along the way as well, and then again when it had to be revised.
