When selling a car
do you handwrite a bill of sale?
If so, what should be in it.

I might be buying a car from a "private party" and was wondering the same thing? Has anyone recently bought or sold a car to another individual ? One thing I'm not sure of, is I 've read that the seller is supposed to take the registration and plates off of the car once the sale is complete, but then how can the buyer drive the car home w/out plates or registration. Does that mean the buyer can only take delivery of the car after going to the DMV with the new title & bill of sale and getting the new plates and registration ? Seems like a very awkward process..especially if you need to leave the car at the sellers residence for days until you are able to do all this at the dmv.Also, does the New York State DMV require the bill of sale to be notorized ?

The dmv doesn't mention that the bill of sale needs to be notorized, but I'm just wondering how people go about initially bringing home a vehicle that they purchase from out of town, say on a saturday. After you actually complete the sale w/ the owner, you need to at that point still get the car insured..and bring that proof to the dmv. Do you just leave the car you just purchased at the original owners house and pick it up later in the week after you've been able to go to the DMV and get the new plates, title, and registration ?
