When in Vegas
Do you have to stay on the strip to really enjoy all that Vegas is or are there any other options that a very close by but not as expensive?
I am just trying to see if we can swing a trip there in October...
Anyone has any advice?

IMO you're missing out if you don't stay on the stip..........you can get a GREAT deal @ a good hotel - you don't have to stay @ the Wynn

they usually have deals all year round.. you just have to keep checking.. like expedia.com..and ones like that ..
its probably still a little early to book for mid october.. but you can definitely stay on the strip! this way too you dont have to rent a car.. so that will save you money too!!

Re: When in Vegas
its funny cause on channel 4 last nite they were JUST talking about how Vegas is starting to drop their prices dramatically on their hotels and people should take advantage.
they even mentioned the Wynn hotel--how this time last year prices were $192 and now they are only around $102 a nite.
I think you should be able to research like crazy and find good rates.

ITA... you can get a great deal at a hotel on the strip. Sooo worth it b/c then you're right there with all the action. No worries about getting a taxi back. Everything is in walking distance or they have the monorail. I've stayed at MGM, NY NY, Venetian and Mandalay. Best price was NY NY, but I loved Mandalay the best.

Re: When in Vegas
I am positive you'll find a reasonable rate on the strip. I've been to Vegas 7 times, and have always stayed on the strip, for as little as $39/night sometimes! I wouldn't even worry too much about which hotel you choose, I'd feel comfortable booking whichever hotel offered the best price. I have never been dissatisfied with any of the accomodations on the strip.

Re: When in Vegas
You don't HAVE to stay on the strip, but it is way easier. I LOVE being so close to everything and with the monorail you can get more places without paying the taxis prices. I love The Flamingo, but Harrah's is pretty centrally located and has some great rooms and prices. The nice thing about Vegas is that once you're there get the players card and gamble some at the hotel casinos because they will send you coupons for special room rates. I went in September and now I have coupons for free rooms because of what I gambled. I spent $500 max at Flamingo and Harrahs gambling and like I said delux rooms are comped for a 4-5 day trip when I choose to go.

If you don't stay on the strip, you will have to apy for transportation to and from the strip. I think it's worth it to stay on the strip, they have good deals all the time.

Re: When in Vegas
From past experience, if you are doing October, you should look to book on the earlish side as many companies have their conventions/trade shows/etc... in October. It may not be the case now with the way the economy is though.
I went to a wedding there a couple of years ago in October and it was very difficult findiing a room for the length of time I was going. It was also difficult finding a room at a reasonable rate as well.

Re: When in Vegas
There are plenty of places to stay off the strip that are very nice and close by as well. But like everyone said, strip prices are falling fast, so you should be able to get great deals. I would wait a bit for October though, prices are going to keep falling all year.
PS- I live out in Vegas, and I work for a casino company, so feel free to FM with any questions.
