When does the baby's heart start to beat?

I am getting conflicting information from the web. One site tells me 5 weeks, another 6 and another said 7. My doctor told me I will hear it in my appointment 2 weeks from now but does anyone know when it actually starts?

Just wondering...

Hear it, or see it? I thought you couldn't hear the heartbeat until later on (the first time I heard mine was at the ultrascreen at almost 13 wks). I saw it for the first time about 7 wks. I think it actually starts beating early - 5-6 wks.

Re: When does the baby's heart start to beat?

I had previously read that you can see it around 8 weeks, but I had an emergency sono at 6w after a little bleeding incident and we saw the heartbeat. I then had another sono 2 days later as a follow-up to be safe, and they used the same machine for that sono that they used for my ultrascreen today, so we actually heard the heartbeat. I was about 6.5w at that point.

Heard it again today. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: When does the baby's heart start to beat?

If you look at the potentially related topics to this one, it gives a lot of topics on this - looks like some heard it as early as 9, and some have seen it as early as a little over 5 wks. From what I've read, it starts beating pretty soon after conception - it's just that it's so tiny in the being it's undetectable until certain stages.

It all depends on the bean. With my first DD we saw her heart beat at 6 weeks. With my second I saw it at 7 weeks. with my 3rd (current DD) there was no heart beat at 5 or 6 weeks, but at 7weeks.

Starts beating 5/6 weeks, but you can be absolutely sure that you are going to see it at 8 weeks. I think any time before that you may/may not be able to hear it. I heard mine at 12 weeks.

That makes sense because I will be 7 wks at my next appointment so if that's the case I should be able to hear it then! Chat Icon

you won't be able to hear it that early, but see it on a sonogram. I think the dopplers pick it up anywhere from 10-11 weeks.

Re: When does the baby's heart start to beat?

We were told we would probably be able to see it around 6 weeks, but wouldn't be able to hear it until aroun 12 weeks. My doctor was actually able to find the heartbeat at my 10 week appt and she said that it was very unusual.

I saw and heard it with an internal sonogram at 6 weeks and 2 days. You can't hear it with the doppler until about 11-12 weeks.
