When do you pay a Painter for the paint?
I was referred to a handyman by someone I don't know at all (on a local moms group website), and he asked for money up front to pay for paint (about $250). I told him I need the receipt first and I'm not comfortable giving him money to do this when I don't know him. He said he was burned by past customers who didn't want to pay him after he bought the materials (something about them saying he bought the wrong paint or that they didn't ask for something he bought). So basically he says he's not comfortable doing business like that (even though I explained to him that he knows where I live and I'm not going to not pay him, we went over exactly what I need and how much each can of paint would be). He lost the job with me, was his choice... but now I have to find a new painter!

We've always paid for materials up front.
Our painting was a big job (whole house) so we left a deposit. I believe it was half of the whole job amount.
When we had our railings done we paid for the material up front.

Did you know/trust the guys or work with him before? I'm just wondering if this is standard practice. He's self-employed as a handyman, it's not a big company.

Re: When do you pay a Painter for the paint?
My stepfather has his own painting business. I am not sure if he asks for the money upfront but I know for a fact that he has gone to the store to buy a lot paint and materials for a few customers who hired him to do a job for them then after he went and got the materials and paint the customer would turn around and be like "oh we got a better quote from someone else" leaving him to eat the costs.... paint is expensive. I can see where you are coming from though, I'd feel weird handing over a lot of money to some guy that I didn't even know but at the same time, I know his point of view. Maybe you would feel more comfy paying for materials upfront to someone that you trusted

DH is a painter on the side and he usually has his customers buy their own paint. He tells them exactly how much and what kind and suggests on where to get it.

The railing guy - a lot of people on here used him. But we didn't "know" him.
The painters were a company - we researched the heck out of them. Checked their license with Nassau County Consumer Affairs, etc. etc.
He could have easily done what a PP suggested - told you what to buy and had you buy it yourself...
If you're looking for recs - we used Precision Painting Plus out of Copiague. Good luck!

This is exactly what we did with our painter too.
