When do you give a kid a pillow??

Is sixteen months too early for a pillow??

I'm not sure what the rule of thumb is on this stuff. My son, who is quite the character, decided to make his own pillow using the loveys and stuffed animals in his crib. I guess he's trying to tell me he feels he is ready. Next week he'll be walking around in a smoking jacket and applying to his preferred Universities. Chat Icon

Beginning last week, I notice that when I put him in the crib he shimmies up to the corner (his fave spot) of the crib, takes his blanket, tucks the corners under each armpit, sticks his butt up in the air, folding his legs and feet underneath, AND THEN he added something to his usual routine... he sticks his arm out, GRABS Peter Rabbit and mushes him into a ball, shoving it under his head like a pillow! Another night, he took his lovey, mushed it together, and stuck it under his head.

Last night he took THREE different stuffed animals - the lovey, the elephant, and the giraffe and formed a pillow.Chat Icon

Should I just buy him a pillow? Is this normal? Safe? Chat Icon

I know a lot of people do it in the crib, but I never bothered with a pillow until they were in a toddler bed. They were sleeping fine, so I figured why mess with it lol

IMO if they can move freely around and stand and lift then they will be fine with a pillow.

If he has blankets under his head they can easily cover him as much as a pillow.

I can't remember when I gave DS one but its been a long time and we did it once when he was sick.

So, it appears he kind of WANTS one by his behavior -- he sleeps fine either way. I mean, if I take all the stuffed animals (I mean, there are three) out of the crib he still sleeps just fine. If I leave them in he creates a pillow.

So, is it safe to give him a real pillow as it seems he wants one?

Oh yeah he's moving, walking, standing, preparing his taxes, lol. All of the above. OK, so I guess this is OK - he seems to want it, it can't hurt him.

I guess I'll buy a toddler one with pillow case from PBK to match his bedding.

At this point, it is safe. And if he seems to want it, go for it.

Neither of my kids seemed to care, so I left it alone.

I don't remember exactly when DS got a pillow, but I think it was around 20 months. He was sick and I wanted to prop him up a bit. He took to the pillow so we never took it away.

I think if the baby can roll over, then it's fine to give a pillow.

Re: When do you give a kid a pillow??

I gave my DD a pillow at 14 months. She didn't really sleep on it at first, but she started to sleep on it more around 18 months. Even now (she will be 20 months next week) I will find her in her crib with her feet on the pillow and head on the other end! She's very restless!

We just gave her an old flatter pillow that we already had in the house.

ETA - I believe we started giving it to her because she was sick also, and we wanted her propped a bit.

We gave him a regular size pillow at around 27 months or so. But we def could have done it much earlier.

Re: When do you give a kid a pillow??

I did it around 16 months or so. My DS did the same thing as yours - so it started with me putting an extra small blanket in the crib with him - so he could make one a pillow and use one for himself. I figured a firm baby pillow was fine at that point - which it was (for us).

Prob around 19 months. It's a toddler pillow from pottery barn. Small, but a perfect size for his crib and he knows exactly how to sleep on to at night.

I'm pretty sure my ILs who watch DS during the day have had a pillow in his crib at their house for a while. As long as he's able to freely move around and pick himself up, I'm not worries.

With my twins we gave it to them when we moved them to toddler beds at 3y2m. They had their first blanket then too. With my youngest he is 2.5 and in a toddler bed still without a pillow because I know he would sleep under it.

I gave him a toddler pillow at around 18 or so months and the first night he probably had the best night of sleep in his little life!! Lol
He was like your DS, propping stuffed animals under his head. So I figured to give it a try and he loved it.

at 2. I think its been better for his head to be a little bit more elevated (especially since he has been battling cold after cold recently).
