When do you call the doc?

Normally I'm good at when to call the doctor for the boys, but this one is tough. My 3 year old woke Friday A little off. His temp was 99 in one ear and 100 in the other. Not a fever, but not right for him either. I kept him home from preschool. He was in and out of sleep Friday just drinking water and juice. His fever went up to 101.
He woke up Saturday morning no fever at all and seemed fine. Just a little runny nose. Was like that the rest of the weekend. Bad runny nose, but no fever.
This morning he woke up with a bad cough. I could hear it in his chest. No fever and seems better than Friday, but worse than Saturday. His face is all red from wiping his nose with his sleeves and his eyes are glassy. I called him out from school again.
Should I take him to the Docs at this point? It's the cough that bothers me. Plus, on Wednesday is his Passover show and I figured I wouldn't want to infect the other kids today and want him to be healthy for the show and Seder.
Thanks

I would take him to the dr just because of the cough. Same thing happened to my daughter a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't going to take her to the doc but then she started coughing. Then she coughed so hard she gasped for air a few times. I took her right in. Thankfully nothing in her chest but she did wind up having strep throat. I hope he feels better soon!

When do you call the doc?

Personally I would not. The cough is probably from the post nasal drip and will take a while to clear up.

I would have taken him when he was 101, mucous could have gone to ear and caused ear infection too. Now if you hear anything in his chest I would take him ASAP.

DS had a cough, runny nose and fever a couple weeks ago. He was wheezing. Even with nebulizer treatments and some steroid (he was spitting it out) he had to have a chest xray after 4 days and it showed the start of pneumonia.

I never mess with fever when there are cold symptoms cause of ears and chest.

Re: When do you call the doc?

I don't play around with coughs anymore. MY dd had walking pneumonia in Jan. It was just this awful cough and a very low grade fever but on and off. She just seemed off to me so I took her to the dr. Right away I could tell by the way the dr. kept listening to her over and over again. I felt awful because I just kept brushing it off and as a bad cold. For a very bad cough and congestion its worth a co-pay to the doctor for me.

I have a 3 day rule.. If I feel she's off and its day three.. she goes in. Fever or not. What's the worse they can say "She's fine, you're silly?" meh

Personally tho, I let AJ cook until she's at 102. As long as she's still acting fine. This is post tubes tho. Pre-tubes it was a 4 day count down from a cold to an ear infection. With or without a fever.

I am pretty good about listening to her chest (from her back) to hear if its really her lungs or its her throat / phlegm I am hearing. So far I've been dead on. Those days I know its in her lungs and those days its not (mostly its not). Her constant allergy med dosage has kept her mostly clear in her bronchial tubes.

Re: When do you call the doc?

Thanks all. I don't hear the cough as much so it could be post nasal. I have the apt for the doctor already at noon so I'll just keep it. May be nothing and a waste of money, but better to know. Especially with his show coming up that I want to see him in. He was sick for his Hanukkah show throwing up that morning.
I didn't take him Friday with the fever bc there was no cough then. Just the fever and he was drinking and sleeping on and off.

This. I would keep the humidifier running and do the nasal saline spray.
