Re: when do I start to offer a spoon to self feed?
I would offer a spoon now, especially if you are feeding him something like mashed potatoes or pudding. He'll make a total mess at first but you have to start somewhere.
My DD is 26 months and still not proficient with the spoon. She is great with 100% concentration but if there is a small distraction half goes in her mouth and half goes in the bib.

Now
I started right away, like 7 mths. She still uses her hands, but knows how to use a spoon and fork.

Re: when do I start to offer a spoon to self feed?
DS is 15 mos - about a month ago I started letting him try a spoon once in a while when he is in the mood to do it. If i put food on the spoon and hand it to him he will put it in his mouth. If I give him the spoon he will put the food in it with his fingers and then put it in his mouth. Depending on the food he often misses. Once I tried a fork though and that worked great but, i don't want to let him use the fork completely alone right now. Anyway, DS isn't the most cooperative child so its like once a week if I'm lucky that he'll try!

I started at 11 months. Brooke is 13 1/2 months and she feeds herself oatmeal and potatoes(anything that sticks to the spoon well).

it's never too soon - they may pick up on it - DD was 5 months when we gave her a spoon. She kept trying & does very well now at 18 months.

Parker is 14 months, and I will give him the spoon now and then for his fav. foods (that way I know he will try and get it in the mouth). He actually does btter than I thought..this weekend I am going out to get more kiddie utensils that may be easier for him to grasp.

Re: when do I start to offer a spoon to self feed?
We started about 2 weeks ago.. she gets a spoon, while i also feel her with a spoon. Our first attempt was with yogurt, I made sure to clap and cheer everytime she got spoon in mouth.. she loved it!! Then by the end of the meal the spoon became a paintbrush and she decided it was time to color herself. I took pictures.. it was great.

Re: when do I start to offer a spoon to self feed?
I started around 11 or 12 months and since about 13 months she has been feeding herself. It definitly can be messy depending what she is eating but she does a decent job.
