when do babies start syaing words and know what they are saying

Today my dh asked me if Allison should be saying words and know what she is saying. She says Hi da but its more of a sound then actually saying hi to dh.Also she will mimick you if you say good girl to her. She does say cat (sort of0 when she sees my moms cat and gets all excited to se eher. She will be 9 months on the 16th

I'm not sure but I can tell you Ryan says mama - not LOOKING at me but he'll say it when he wants something so I *think* it's in reference to me, as he knows I will respond if he says it but I'm not sure he knows that's my name. He waves his arm when we say bye bye but he doesn't say it. I do think 9 months is on the early side, I remember reading around a year they should know a word or 2. (they may know it but aren't saying it yet...) and I think it's later for boys then girls.

DD is 14 months and doesn't really say much besides mama and some other things, CA for cat, etc... but there are babies her age that have an extensive vocabulary.
I don't think that at 9 months babies are supposed to be saying anything besides babbling, don't worry!
