When did you start pumping breastmilk?

I feel so engorged. I'm 7 days pp. Is it too early to start?

With my first - Day 1. Preemie.
With my second - Day 3. Home from the hospital.

I didn't exclusively pump. You should start as soon as possible if you want to increase your milk supply. You don't want to get too engorged or you'll wind up with mastitis.

Re: When did you start pumping breastmilk?

Should have started right away in the hospital.....but I started on the 2nd day, when DS was about 48 hours old. He was in the NICU & they forced me to give him formula so my milk took it's sweet a** time coming in. I started pumping at LEAST 1 time a day after the morning (8AM ish ) feeding as a regular thing at 5 days. After about 2 weeks, I pumped 2 times a daymorning & nighttime after last evening (10ish) feeding until 10 weeks. Then I increased pumping through the day as I was going back to work a few weeks later & DS needed to get used to daytime bottles.

Started my last day in the hospital. That's when my milk came in and it came in fast...I had no choice. But it was good because the nurse walked me through it so I felt more comfortable doing it myself when I got home.

I am considering pumping exclusively as well. This whole nipple latching thing is so stressful and painful. I still want to give DS his nutrients though.

Re: When did you start pumping breastmilk?

Odd man out here- if you plan to exclusively pump, then I suppose you could start full-on pumping now. But, if want to EBF, then you should ONLY pump enough to relieve the engorgement. At this point, your body needs to regulate how much milk to produce for your little one.

By pumping too soon (and I mean pumping out your whole breast rather than just enough to relieve engorgement) you might throw off the amount of fore vs. hindmilk that your LO is getting. Not a dangerous thing, but it can cause gas, tummy aches, and your LO might not stay full long enough (the hindmilk is high in fat).

With both girls, I would only pump to relieve the pain until they were about 5 weeks old (1 month). I'd give a bottle of pumped milk (usually 2-3 oz) once a day to get them used to taking a bottle.

After a month, I started pumping in the mornings to build my freezer stash.

Re: When did you start pumping breastmilk?

I started day 1 in the hospital. Baby was a preemie and in NICU so I couldn't BF right away.

Re: When did you start pumping breastmilk?

I started the day I got home from the hospital. You really should not let yourself get engorged. Not only can it be dangerous for you, but it does nothing to help your milk supply either.

I started pumping even before I left the hospital. I exclusively pumped for DS.
