When did you start disciplining your child?

DS is 12m old. I don't know if it is too early to start disciplining him. I have heard 18m is a good time to start. I was just curious when other parents started disciplining and how. What did you start with?

Just an example - one thing DS loves to do is squeeze oranges and make a mess. This drives DH crazy. I used to think it was cute and put it in the exploration bucket. DS whines whenever he sees an orange because he wants to squeeze them. I just distract him with something else so he stops whining. I don't think this is disciplining though. Should I just take away the orange and say no? Is that a better way of disciplining?

I dont know if you would call it discipline, but I would redirect DS from doing something if I didnt want him doing it.

As for time outs and what not, I may have started around 2, maybe even a little younger. I dont remember. I never had to do many time outs with DS.

Re: When did you start disciplining your child?

18 months I started with time outs for my DD.

My DS is 8 months and I always tell him No when he tries to put something in his mouth - he stops what he is doing, smiles at me and then puts it in his mouth anywayChat Icon but he knows from the tone of my voice that he should not be doing it - amazing they know so young.

As for your little one squeezing oranges at this age I would be on board for the whole discovery thing and let him do it.

I think discipline is not something you "start" doing at a certain age. From the time they are babies, we are stearing them away from danger, telling them "no" when they want to do things that are not acceptable, etc.

I've never done the formal "time out". It never worked. Re-directing works, with my older one now I can send him to his room, and I go in 5 minutes later to talk about what he did.

same here...DD at 18 mo I think (now she is 2.5 yrs)
and my 15 mo old DS laughs when I discipline- but I try to not laugh and remain stern...and he def knows he shouldn't be doing it! I tried a time out once..i dont think he got it! Although my DD thinks he should go into a time out sometimes!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: When did you start disciplining your child?

Early, like way earlier than she would even understand, but not because I thought it was going to work, but I wanted words like no to be part of her understanding as she got older. At 12 months we started doing time outs by ignoring her or taking something away. So she wouldn't sit in time out, but we would remove US from her or remove a toy, etc., from her. Around 15 months she actually understood a time out, but she had exceptional verbal skills and understanding, so I wouldn't expect that to be the norm.
But it's always been part of what we do with her.
