Wheezing While Breathing With a Cough

Updated further down in the thread

Emma has had a cough for several days now. I was referring to it as the "kennel cough" from daycare. Anyway, she now has this wheezing sound while she is breathing. It's not constant though. She hasn't had a fever. I'll take her to the doc. tomorrow if it's not gone when she wakes up (doubt it will be), but does this sound like it could be bronchitis?

Do you mean a hudmidifier? No I don't. I sat in the bathroom with her for about 20 minutes today with the hot shower running. It seemed to help a bit.

My sister was saying that bronchitis usually has a fever so I'm really hoping that's not it.

Personally, I'd call the dr and get her checked. Any sounds of wheezing should be checked IMO. My younger son was very sick when he was really small and always ends with wheezy breathing when he has a cold. Sometimes nebulizer treatments are in order. Maybe not but better safe than sorry. HTH

I would also say that you should take her to the Dr for any type of wheezing.

When Emily was a year and 3 months she had a rattling noise when she breathed all night --- and in the AM it was worse ---- we called the pediatrician, she sent us to the ER --- and it turns out she has asthma. She has had a few attacks since then.

I am not trying to freak you out, but asthma is very common with a lot of kids these days, and common colds can aggrivate it.

Even if it's not that babies can get broncialitis and they need nebulizers to treat it.

I would call the pediatrician in the AM if not make an emergency call in during the night if it gets worse.

Thanks everyone. I'll call in the morning. She's sleeping now and seems to be okay. Earlier in the week her nose was runny from a cold, so I'm just hoping this is the tail end of it and nothing worse.

I have a CSE meeting tomorrow for DS and it was Emma's "school" pictures at daycare. I just can't win sometimes! Not to mention my job is going to be mad. Oh well, such is life!

I took DD to the doctor today. They told me that babies don't get bronchitis so it's just a viral thing that she probably got from the daycare kids. They also said that wasn't wheezing that I heard, it was probably just the sound of the congestion and it tends to be louder and more radiated in infants since they are so small.

Yes, that sounds like it could be childhood asthma, Noah is asthmatic and he coughs a lot and has a rattle and/or a wheeze a lot of the time. I thought it was a kennel cough (if you will) also...but turns out my baby has Asthma

I ouwld set up a humidifier for her- you can pick one up in Target or CVS. That's what we did when DS had a little cold. Unfortunately, there's not much more you can do.

my little one recently was diagnosed with Reactive Airway Disease (basically childhood asthma) he is on a nebulizer 2-3 times a day as needed. I was freaked out at 1st because I though it was "just a cold" ugghh. Hope you dc is better soon!!!

She wasn't doing it at all at the doctors so it's not an all the time thing thank god!

DS has the same thing. It started from daycare and he's had it on and off since he first started going. He gets the wheezes sometimes with it, but the doc has said, and this is more than one doc, it can often sound worse than it is and even though I may think it is, it's not in his chest. He has the nebulizer when it gets worse and we keep the humidifier on in his room and use Saline drops to help soften and suck out the mucous through his nose. I would however, still go to the doc if your concerned and it persists.
