what's the difference between....
a maternal fetal specialist and a reproductive endocrinologist?
I just had my 2nd m/c in 5 months and my OB/GYN wants to send me to a maternal fetal specialist to run extensive blood work. Is this the same as an RE? I was too much of a mess to ask her when I was in the office

I think a maternal fetal specialist is a high risk obgyn, not an re which is a reproductive endocrinologist but I could be wrong. Sorry to hear about your m/c.

Sorry to hear about your losses. 
An RE is more like a fertility specialist - they help you get pregnant.
A maternal fetal specialist helps keep you pregnant and your unborn baby healthy. These kinds of docs are basically OB's for high-risk pregnancies such as women with a history of miscarriages, multiples and other health issues that a regular OB is not trained to handle.

Exactly, you should probably seek out an RE, at this point.

Thanks...that makes sense.
I don't have issues getting pregnant (got preggers 2x on 4 tries) so an RE isn't going to help but 2 miscarriages equals a history of them so the MFS is what she's referring me to.

I'm so sorry for all you have gone through.
Please let me know if you have any questions or want to chat. I went through a lot of testing too after my 2nd miscarriage.
You will want to see a RE to find out why you are having recurrent miscariages. A Maternal Fetal Medicine is just a High Risk OBGYN, that would be who you would see once you are pregnant. The RE is going to find out why the miscarriages our happening and then treat you, after that once you get pregnant again they may trasnfer you to a Maternal Fetal Specialist. Hope that helps!

thanks for ur replies ladies.
I asked my dr. why an MFS and not an RE and it was as I thought, The MFS also specializes in recurring miscarriages so they'll do the same testing and since I don't have issues getting preggers that's the best for me at this point, theyll also monitor me until I get preggers and reach my 2nd trimester then send me back to my OB/GYN.
both sound so similar!
