Whats the deal with the 32oz/day "rule"

So whats the theory behind babies not having more than 32oz of milk/day...

Is this just pretaining to formula; or for BM as well???

Right now my son is taking 4- 7oz bottles/day and nursing 2-3times/day...

Im figuing he is eating between 36-40oz of BM/day...

I havent even spoke to my ped about it....but have "heard" or "read" that babies should not exceed 32oz/day.

Why is that???

I never heard that. I thought the "max" was 40oz. Although I know babies that have had more than that in a day.

I would say what your son is eating is normal.

You might be right...maybe its 40 and Im just confused...Chat Icon

ETA- none the less... why though??? If they want to eat more than that- why are they "not supposed too?"

My ped said she should only be taking 32 oz, but she also said ok she is 3 mo. she should not exceed 32 oz, not sure if that increases with age or not

I think it is different for BF babies, I think the 32 oz is for formula babies, I think it is different because your DS will regulate when he nurses - he may be slowing down his intake when he is nursing. Also he may eat more because BM digests quicker (but I am not sure if that is correct but it just makes sense to me, I know my daughter was eating more when she was drinking breastmilk than she does now)

If he is hungry he needs to eat.....what are you going to do stop feeding him at 3 in the afternoon. I would just ask at your next appt.

My ped said to limit MILK after 18 mos (when I asked) to 3-4 servings per day.
Something to do with iron absorption??? I don't buy it.

DS doesn't usualy eat much dairy other then milk. He has periods where he could eat cheese all day - those days I give him either watered down milk or water.

Re: Whats the deal with the 32oz/day "rule"

I was told 40 yesterday because anything more is too many calories and the baby will gain weight too quickly.

I don't think there's a limit for BF babies. I have no idea why there's a recommended amount for formula fed babies.

I've never heard that. At 3 months old my DS was drinking 5 8oz bottles and my Dr. was ok with that.

This is what I was told as well, for a FF baby.

Re: Whats the deal with the 32oz/day "rule"

My Dr never told me to limit them at all. Some days they took in 305 oz, some days they took in 50. Also isn't your son EBF? I think the "limit" is only for formula babies tho I would not limit my kids from eating. It will all even out once they start crawling/walking. My sons gained weight extremely quickly now they are tall and very active and have plateaued and started drinking less and will go to milk next month

Re: Whats the deal with the 32oz/day "rule"

When i raised concerns that my DD was eating too much the Ped didnt seem to be bothered by it (she was eating 36oz/day at 3 weeks) She said unless the baby is actually vomiting the milk because theres no room for it then youre not overfeeding. if they are hungry, feed them!

i was concerned that she'd gain too much weight too quickly

by 3 weeks shed gained just under 2lbs, and she's a reflux baby! Chat Icon

however to my amazement the Ped was very pleased with her weight gain so ive learned to accept that if she's hungry -- feed her!

(however, over the past 2 weeks she's been taking much less, btwn 24-28oz. we think she was overeating due to the reflux and now that shes on Zantac shes feeling better and eating less)

Re: Whats the deal with the 32oz/day "rule"

I've only heard that it's a problem when FF babies drink more than 40oz a day because of hte iron in the formula. Supposedly that is too much for them.

That makes sense...

I would never ever limit what my child ate, and dont EVER concern myself with excessive weight gain (as despite how much they eat- my kids are peanuts)

I was just curious as of to WHY- since IMO the more BM- the more nutrition they would be getting...
