What's a reasonable clothes budget?

I am trying to budget and think about how much we should set aside monthly for clothes (not that we would buy monthly).

I shop at Target, Gap, Gymboree, Old Navy usually. I don't generally pay full price for things.

I have a 3&1/2 year old gir and an almost 4 month old boy.

Is $200 a month a lot, too little? Chat Icon

I spent about $200 in Target for DD last night and that about covers summer but she needs some capris and tees for spring. And that's Target where things are cheap.

What do you alot per season? Do you do 4 seasons or twice a year?

Re: What's a reasonable clothes budget?

$200 a month seems extremely high to me and I have 2 kids (one who is 10 and has more expensive clothing). I typically only buy on clearance though, or the thrift store, and I don't buy monthly. I buy seasons ahead. I use many coupons. I have gotten $30 in free clothing for DD from Kohls in the past couple of weeks.

according to all the financial gurus, you should spend no more than 3-5% of your take home income on the family's clothing. yah...i dont follow that rule! Chat Icon

Re: What's a reasonable clothes budget?

I think it may be a bit too much. The way I look at it is that's about $600 per child to cover Spring/Summer and then another $600 per child to cover Fall/Winter. Shoes and coats can be more expensive, but I think you could probaly do $150-$175 a month. I guess it depends on how often you shop and how much you want to spend.

OK so help me out.
What's a reasonable amount of clothes for a preschool age child?

I'm not worried about DS too much because he's young and his stuff is cheap, no shoes and he gets excess because he goes through many outfits a day.

Here's what I got in Target
2 skirts with matching tops
5 sun dresses
3 shorts
3 tees
1 t shirt with leggings
1 pink t shirt

Am I supposed to be done now? That doesn't seem like very many clothes to get through spring/summer.

for DS i make sure he has about 10 "outfits" so i don't have to do laundry once a week if i don't have time(that's per season). so for your DD, she has 11 outfits there (and i am guessing you can probably mix them up to get more). so i would think you are set, but that's just based on my own shopping preferences.

i have extra onesies and extra socks too because those tend to get dirtier faster, but he's six months old.

Re: What's a reasonable clothes budget?

I would assume in the spring she will most likely be wearing her jeans or pants she wore in the winter with SS tops? Although I think you are in another state so if it's warm, then yes, that doesn't seem like a lot. I think a general guideline is enough clothing for 7 days. Of course many of us have enough for 30 days Chat Icon

Me, personally wouldn't be done. But that's meChat Icon I would get some capris that can go into Spring and Summer. maybe a few lightweight cardigans that can be used over the sundresses that you already purchased, this way they can be used for Spring also. Maybe a few t-shirts and a couple more pairs of shorts and you should be good!

Great idea about the cardigans so she can use the dresses in spring! I hadn't thought of that.

I do need some capris because it can be warm in CO late April/May because the sun is so strong jeans are a little hot unless they're light weight.

OK so some cardigans, some capris and a few more tees should do it. Maybe I'll get a Kohl's coupon in the mail.

Re: What's a reasonable clothes budget?

Is your Kohls remodeling? If it is, sign up for their email list and they will email you coupons. I keep getting $10 off coupons via email after they remodel a department. They've been coming for 3 weeks now. Then when I go in the store, they have given me another $10 coupon to be used the following week. Their Jumping Bean capris, shorts and tops are on sale for $6 and are pretty cute.

Re: What's a reasonable clothes budget?

You didn't mention shoes, socks, swimsuits or sunglasses?

Check out Kohl's. I love going to that store for kids clothes 'cus when you get the 30% off the clothes are so cheap. Carter's stuff there is usually half off, then with the 30% off, it's such a steal. :D

Children's place is also great when you get their coupons.

And $200 does seem expensive per month. I would try to cut it down to $200 per season by trying to buy on sale or closer to the end of the season.

That would include shoes and socks and swimsuits.

I know I can't do $200 per season for two kids. Maybe $200 each per season but even that might be pushing it.
