Not every Dr. will send you for a growth sono, but if you do have one it will be at some point after 32 weeks or so. What they do is a detailed sono where they measure the limbs, the body and the head. All of those numbers get mixed and they come up with an approximate weight. From what I've heard, these are really just educated guesstimations and can be off up to two pounds either direction.
