What would you have done?

I took my DS to the library today for our regular mommy and me class. As soon as I walk in, I see a dad and his son. Both look absolutely filthy. The dad is wearing a dirty T-shirt and flip flops (which he kept kicking off and walking around barefoot) and the little boy was wearing dirty looking pajamas. Well the little boy crawled over to my son and grabbed his hand and I saw what looked like a ton of dandruff in his hair and then I saw it moving! I quickly made it look like I needed to make a call and then moved to the other side of the room. Well, during the class the little boy was crawling all over and playing with other babies and I didn't know what to do. I felt like I should say something, but it was just awkward. When the class was over we left and I called DH. He was kinda annoyed with me and said I should have said something to the dad and left the class. What are your thoughts? Should I have said something? If so, to who? The dad? The class facilitator? DH pointed out that it can be expensive to get rid of lice and now I feel guilty. I hope none of the other babies got it. I also feel bad for the little boy because it had to be uncomfortable.

same. but privately. I wouldn't want to embarrass anyone. I would just express my concern for the child.

This

I would call or go back. The library may need to make some phone calls to those families.

Wow, that is so awkward! I wouldn't have known what to do either. How could you really say anything during the class without everyone hearing? I really don't know what I would have done . . . That poor kid!

As others have suggested, I would now call the library and tell them. Let them sort it out.

I've never dealt with lice but I didn't realize they were something you could see unless you were very very close up (but I could be wrong about this). Are you sure it was lice? Sad and yucky either way. I just feel so bad for the kid based on your description. Chat Icon

My heart is just broken for that little boy. I would call back now and tell someone. I def. wouldn't have said anything to the dad himself.

Wow I feel so sorry for that little boy. That's so sad. I wouldn't have known what to do either but I would want to help that poor child so I guess in hindsight it would be best to call the library and alert them to the situation.

Yikes I would have talked to someone at the library after the class was over. I would take my child to the restroom and sanitize his hands big time. Just keep checking his head for live in the meantime. Hopefully he doesn't get it. I would absolutely talk to someone at the library

Yep not the dad. Being Dirty isn't the issue, the poor kid has lice well that's just sad but also not a direct result of being dirty. Ironically lice don't like dirty. Its a stigma but more myth than truth. Because tons of very clean children get lice from well kept children every single day.

But I would have HAD to say something to the person in charge. I could care less about dirty, stinky or poorly dressed. Lice though is just an annoyance to everyone.

But man creepy crawlies for sure.. making me dying to go home and wash my kid's hair in the Fairy Tales stuff.

But you don't know the circumstance. He could be an idiot dad but a loving one in the middle of a divorce (sounds to me like the diabetic parking story I know but you just DONT know). So I'm not keen on blaming parents. Lice happens. They don't miraculously manifest themselves from dirt. They are passed on. So what if this guy has no idea the kid has it? Because he's too dumb to know better (seriously).

Still I wouldn't talk to the Dad but heck yeah I'd be over at that facilitator's ear faster than you could say Riddex! And yeah I'd probably have left, to be honest.

Dad and son could have been from a shelter.
Flip flops don't sound like normal winter wear...
Tough to say what I would have done.
The library may know...
And lice are everywhere.

I probably would have quietly left, like I do in play places when kids are visibly sick.

I would have left too. Why is that terrible? Life is extremely contagious! However j would have also called the library and reported it. Maybe they could have helped the father or done something. That's so so sad.

I thought lice were so tiny you could not see them moving from a few feet away? I can't imagine what you could have seen moving in his hair.

Anyway, I honestly would have just left and spoken to a librarian on the way out about the situation. Hopefully they would have spoken to the class facilitator.

And I would have a problem with just the dirt alone. It sounds like the father was really inappropriately dressed and a potential health hazard being so filthy and walking around without shoes (who wants his germs/fungus/wart viruses?). Poor little boy!

I think it's possible it was dandruff/cradle cap. I'm pretty sure moving lice are hard to spot even when looking for them. And aren't the moving ones black?
If I suspected lice, I would probably leave. If I saw them for sure, idk what I would do...If I was the child's parent, I would want to know that my kid needed treatment. But, it would be awkward to tell them.
