What would you do about this gift?

So MIL loves to by DD gifts since she's her only grandchild and tends to go much more expensive than I would on clothes. Last night she gave DD a christmas dress, coat, and accessories. I had already gotten a dress but we told her we'll have her wear it for another holiday occasion. The coat is 12 months and is HUGE for DD (she's mostly still in 6 month stuff at 7 months). I went online to see if they make it any smaller (which they don't) and saw that it was almost $70!Chat Icon I really don't want this thing to sit in her closet and be a waste of money but I'm not sure what to do. I feel bad returning it also. Is it tacky to return it and give the credit to MIL and ask her to pick out something else for DD in the future? WWYD?

I would keep it and hope she could wear it next year. Or ask MIL what she wants you to do. I have been through this exact thing with my MIL and I usually ask her what she wants me to do.

I would just explain the situation to MIL. She already knows you have another outfit for her to wear on Christmas, so you don't have to worry about that being awkward. Just tell her it is too big and won't fit her this year and ask her what she would like to do.

I would try to make use of it and enjoy it... That is what we do with all gifts even if it is something we didn't want - need etc...

That's what I normally do. The problem is that she probably won't fit into it until April and it's holiday style coat. We will definitely use the dress and other accessories though.

I guess I'll mention that it was too big and see what she says. I just have a feeling that she'll brush it off. I had a beautiful 3month dress that DD never got to wear (she could only wear onesies as a newborn bc she wore a harness for her hips) and MIL said she could put it on her dolls someday. We had it hung up on her wall so we did enjoy it at least.

I would just hold on to it. Maybe she will be able to wear it next year. But if your MIL asks about it, I would just say it's too bug and maybe she'll offer to return or exchange it!

Normally I would say let it slide, but if the coat was $70 I would say something. Put her in the outfit and if it doesn't fit tell your MIL. Maybe tell her DD is in 6-9 months and a cute NYE outfit would be perfect for her.

If the size is so off that it will be April by the time she can wear it, I would just explain that to your MIL. Tell her you will exchange it for something else or get a credit and she can get something more appropriate for the next holiday like Easter.

I would ask to return it with her. Pick out something else! The sizing is not bad... My 10 month old is tight in 18 month dresses. $70 is a lot of money for a kIds jacket.

What about exchanging it for 18 months? This way she could wear it next winter.

Thanks. I'll definitely let her know it was to big and see what she wants us to do. I like the idea of going bigger for next year so maybe we'll do that. She'll be 18 months at the end of October though, so I know that would be a risk too. But if I did 24 months I might be in the same boat next year!

Re: What would you do about this gift?

I'd just tell her you KNOW she probably spent a small fortune on the coat and the thought of your DD not getting to wear it at all is killing you - Ask her if it came in a smaller size, if not, I'd personally let her return it and pick out something else.

I wouldn't buy for next year - you have NO idea what size she'll be!
