What would you do?
if a sibling is trying to make plans for her b-day and you had plans to see a friend of dh's family. would you cancel or go out to celebrate your sibling's b-day

I would reschedule my plans with the friend. If they're a real friend, they would understand family comes first.

In this case, I would go with family.
But can I throw a monkey wrench in here?
Certain members of my family have this habit of scheduling things last minute. Like, one day prior last minute. And then they expect everyone else to change their schedules.
If I don't, it's my fault. So when I know that a family event is coming up, I don't make plans the entire weekend and if I receive another non-family invite in the meantime, I explain that I might not be able to make it, depending on what happens with family.
Family is important to me also but it's tough when your own schedule and time is disregarded continuously.

the plans are for the middle of sept. so we'll just have to see
