What to tell DC?
DC is having a birthday and none of the kids from the preschool can come. I was hoping at least 1 or 2 could. They all RSVPed no! How do I explain this to him? I will have ~8 kids total after neighbors, friends, family, but still none from the preschool? He knows we invited them all. This is terrible (some parents of parties we went to RSVPed no, which is just awful). I think he is well liked, but his class size is only 8 kids. Ugh, what to do/say??

Re: What to tell DC?
Oh damn we just had an end of the year party and only a few kids came. My dd knew A LOT of kids werent there. We just said kids had things they had to do with their families and couldnt make it. But were all going to have an awesome time. Their loss. She laughed lol maybe that will work. Im sorry that sucks!

Ugh that's sad. But I would just explain the kids already had plans/are busy and can't make it. Then let your child know who is going, what they're going to do, how much fun you'll all have, etc. Focus on the positive.

I'm sorry that you're having to deal with this but I disagree with your above statement. You having gone to their parties doesn't "lock" them in to going to yours. In addition, its very possible that they RSVP'd no because they already had a prior commitment/something to do. I find that once the weather gets warmer (May-August), people have more events/gatherings and are often over committed to things, which unfortunately means saying no to some stuff.

Re: What to tell DC?
We've had to RSVP no to a lot of Bday parties this year because of prior commitments/babysitting issues for the sibling etc. We haven't even started doing "friends/kids" parties for my DD. We have a family party at the house and told her she was having a party with her friends at school. I brought in cupcakes and she was super happy. It was really not a big deal.

Obviously I get that people may be busy and aren't "locked" into coming. It's just that those were the ones that I'd hoped would come. I had to RSVP no to some, so I get it. I'm just really bummed for DC that NO ONE can make it.

Re: What to tell DC?
Aww, I'm sorry that this happened. This is exactly why I dread throwing kids birthday parties. The good news is that you have a decent sized group that IS coming. I would focus on that, both for you and her.
I would also explain that people can't always make it to our parties because they have other things to do. I would point out a party that you couldn't attend due to (fill in the blank). . . That sometimes this happens but then name all the other kids who WILL be there and all the fun that you'll have.
I also agree about it being annoying that you attended some of these parties and they didn't come to yours. Of course this doesn't obligate anyone but I would be feeling a little resentful. We make a huge effort to attend every party that we can (even if we're a little late due to other obligations) and I especially make sure we're at kids parties who attend ours.

Re: What to tell DC?
I honestly think your kid will not even notice if you don't make a big thing of it.
I don't invite preschool kids to my DS birthday. There are 24 in his class& with family (over 10) & select neighbors (another 10), it's NUTS.
DS has never asked or cared about an RSVP list: he's entering kindergarten September.
8 kids is a great number. Enjoy the birthday!
