I like a satin finish the best.  Not at all glossy, and doesn't show wear and tear.

Yeah, if you do glossy you will see more of the "traffic areas"

We have two dogs and have not had a problem with loosing the shin on our hardwood floors (they are gloss finish).
  I personally like the shine of gloss.

we did high gloss, the guy said it is a stronger finish.  but looks wise, I think i like semi gloss better.

the prices I got from different companies varied (and not including a few replacement boards) sanding, no stain, 2 coats oil based poly was about $1.55-1.70 per square foot. 
  But, we are going with a past co-worker of DH's who left his field to work for the family's flooring business and who came highly recommended from a few people. We have been very pleased with the service so far and can't wait to see what our floors look like tomorrow after the sanding and first coat!
