I have used Expedia and been happy, you get what you pay for. Travelocity $ucks in my opinion. They stuck us in some fleabag place we actually had to move hotels it was so bad and they gave us a big problem and it took up lots of our vacation time. We have also rented a house with our whole family in FL for 10 days from VRBO.com and that was great

Re: What's the best website to book a trip?
I start with expedia to get the flight info & hotel ideas.
Then I go to the airlines & hotel websites and see if I can get a better deal. Expedia adds on an airline surcharge so it will always be cheaper to go to the airline sight. The hotels will sometimes offer AAA rates or best rate web deals. It's also beneficial to sign up for their frequent stays cards -- they can help you get your special requests met and sometimes upgrades!
I never tried sites like cheap tickets though.

I usually just deal with the airline and hotels directly.

Me too. I have found that expedia/hotels.com/orbitz usually don't have rates much better than the airlines/hotels themselves. I use those programs to do my research and then I compare it to the price of the hotel/flight directly. I prefer to book directly with the hotel because you can cancel it and with airlines, if there is a problem, you can usually complain or reschedule your flight.
