What I've learned happens during the day when I'm not here
I'm never home during the week. Work in the city but with my office closed I'm working from home. I have suicidal birds that slam into my back window all day long. Literally has happened about 3x today. Cats are fascinated by it but it keeps freaking me out. And being home for the past week I've discovered this is a normal everyday occurrence.

There is no reflection. I went outside and it's just clear into the house. Plus we have never had a dead bird in our backyard.

This used to happen at my parents' house when they had new windows put in. You could see straight from the living room through the house through the dining room window into the backyard, so birds would fly into the window thinking they could go all the way through. It stopped when they got blinds.

You can get inexpensive subtle decals at bird feed stores to place on the windows which will help the birds know something is there.
According to an article I just read, birds also often see the reflection of trees in windows and fly toward them. Thousands are killed in Chicago during migration seasons because of this as it is in the path of a major flyway. Apparently, it doesn't have to be a tall building to pose a danger to birds.
The article said there are volunteer groups who go out each day to collect dead (to keep track of species), injured and just dazed birds. The dazed and injured ones get released when they recover. Some buildings there have even put a specially designed shrink wrap on just to try to keep birds from flying into them accidentally.
