What is your behavior management system?

I have used a few over the years that I found successful. This year however, I have a class that is constantly talking and do not listen well. They have made progress but I feel like I have to constantly be on them. They are good kids individually but the group of them is just not a good mix. I'd love some suggestions. Thanks!

I do table stars for the best behaved/quietest table, and turn a card for individual behaviors. As a class I do a marble jar where I put marbles in and take marbles out. If no one turns a card on a particular day, then 3 marbles go in the marble jar. I also add marbles if they walk quietly in the hall, get a compliment from a special teacher, are working quietly as a class, etc.

I have table stars, too. At the end of the week, the table with the most stars gets a little box of nerds. They loooove them! I also do my bean jar. Beans go in for good behavior, come out for bad. But I do a counting system. I count to 5. They have 5 seconds to stop talking and listening. If I reach 5, beans come out. They also get beans for good thinking, consideration of others, overall good days, etc. Fill the jar half way for a popcorn party, all the way gets a pizza party.

I also do secret students every now and then. I pick a secret student in the am and if that child is good all day, he or she gets a prize. They try to guess who it is but believe me, they don't know and try their best.

I offer the clean desk award, too.

I also try not to yell. I prefer to speak to a child outside. I have a glare that I have done a good job working on. They get the glare or see me waiting and they shuffle, whispering "she's waiting, pass it down" they know not to make me wait! Chat Icon

When I want a class' attention, I stand at the front of the room with my hand raised. When the first student sees me, they raise thier hand and like a wave, everyone raises their hand to listen to further directions.

Many teachers also count down. They say "Gimme 5...4..." and that helps too.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

Thanks for the responses. I do some similar things. I have a picture of a fishbowl and add fish for class points, when they fill the bowl, they get a prize. I have a "warning" board & a "wow" work board (wipe boards) that I use for individual students. I think I will go back to doing team points also. I just need some ideas to use as prizes. I try not to use food as a reward because health in the classroom has been a big issue this year. The other thing I do is put STOP on the board and everytime the noise level/behavior is poor I erase a letter. If they lose all the letters they get something taken away. If they don't lose letters they get class points. I like the idea of a secret student.

I teach 2nd and buy party favpor type rewards at the dollar store. Everything from pencils to erasers, to little toy cars and bouncy balls. They love it - I also bought a cardboard treasure box from Oriental Trading so they feel like it is a real "treasure box"

I do marbles and raffle tickets. The marbles are for the class as a group and when they fill the jar, the whole class gets a prize. We also have raffle tickets and thats for individual behavior. Every Friday, I pick a ticket and the student picks a prize from the treasure box.

I think next year, I'm going to take some money and buy a ton of stuff from Oriental Trading or Rhode Island Novelty. I agree about the candy, but right now, it's cheaper. Chat Icon

Re: What is your behavior management system?

I teach middle school english and came up with the funniest method of getting the kids to be quiet.
i have a green pen that i keep in my desk drawer. anytime the class starts getting rowdy, i sit quietly at my desk, open up my grade book and put little "green dots" next to the chatty students' names. I also like to glance obviously around the room before I start making the marks. At the end of the quarter, each green dot meanrs points will be deducted from their class participation grade for their average.
At the beginning of the year, they notice me sitting there, and I tell them all about the green pen. After that, anytime I take out that pen, they quiet down....or someone yells out "She's got the green pen" and the rest of them quiet down.
It's so simple, but it really works like a charm!

This is cute too!!!

I also have little packets on their tables. When I need a minute or two to get ready for a lesson or need tospeak to another teacher, I tell them they have packet time (which they love) and it keeps them busy but in an intelligent way. I never want them idle.
