What is the deal with "Next Step" formulas?

The kind that if for 9-24 months? Whats the difference/point of them?

I asked my ped about them and he said they weren't necessary unless your child is a VERY poor eater, since milk by itself does not have not many vitamins/minerals in it. If your child is eating a normal amount of solids, you don't need them.
