What do you think?
While I was in MD visiting my sil and fbil, we were discussing the future...
I happen to mention I would like 3-4 kids...
Well that started a discussion...
He was telling me that in his opionion its wrong to have so many....that the world is overpopulated and that if everyone had so many that by the time my grandchildren (or great grandchildren) were older there wouldnt be enough natural resoruces.... He feels that peolpe should at most only have 2 kids... to replace themseleves....
Ive never thought like this... and simply want that many kids just because I love children, and now knowing how wonderful it is to be a mom... I want to mother as many as possible...
Now if you cant support (financially, emotionally or whatever) your children thats a different story... If I couldnt for whatever reason take care of that many children- I wouldnt go having that many...
He was specifically talking about overpopulating... I dont know if I agree or disagree with him, because I never even gave it a thought... but either way he hasnt persuaded me in any way....
Whats your views?

I don't know. It's an interesting point, but I don't think families with 4 kids as big families. I know a few people who have 6 or more siblings, that's a large family. And what about all the couples nowadays that don't have children? Wouldn't it just even out?

I may be wrong here but I think he was way off base and rude - JMO.
If you can financially and emotionally handle 3 or 4 kids then go for it! The world needs more caring moms like you.

I dont think 4 kids is alot either... he had to brace himself when I said that
I also think.... years ago....BIG families were very common...and everyone has survived....and I just figured it all evens itself out as well...

I agree with the others, if you want 3 or 4 that is fine. You are making up for those that don't want kids

Re: What do you think?
We are hoping for two although at this point I'd be happy with one.
IMO, I just don't see how I could provide the emotional support four children would need while still being a working mom with a fairly demanding career. Personally, I know I could handle two, maybe three, but probably no more.
I also am concerned about the Earth and the environment but at the same time I don't tell people what they should do regarding how many children they should have.

I think its an interesting topic for discussion but I don't think I really agree with it all that much. I don't know if I'm correct or not but didn't people back in the day have 3, 4 or more kids which isn't as common as it used to be?

I agree.
Does he also see the other side? That many, many deaths occur each year, from illness, murder, natural disaster. I don't think his argument is valid.

Re: What do you think?
I would be curious to know (and honestly curious, not saying this to be a smartass...) what this person does to preserve our natural resources now. I think we are incredibly wasteful as a society and that probably does more damage to the environment than 2 extra children in a family do.
I also think this is a first world idea. Even if we choose to only have 2 children each, there are many more countries that would not follow this idea.

Re: What do you think?
Yea...I didnt get to far into it with him... because I really dont know enough about the topic... and really dont feel anything he could say would change my mind anyway....
I just said you might change your mind after you have kids... the same way I may change my mind after having a second child.... (Ryans sooo good that if I could have 100 just like him I would)
DH- always liked kids... but didnt care one way or the other... If I didnt want any- he wouldnt of pushed me....
Ive always said I wanted 3-4...and he always said he'd like to stop @ 2... Well the day we had Ryan.... he was holding him...and said he def. could have 3 more....Its just amazing

That is true, but the population is growing exponentially. In 1950, right after my parents were born, the world population was 2,556,517,137. In 2006 the world population is 6,525,486,603. We are replacing those who die at a much faster rate. I don't think his argument would convince anyone who wants to have lots of children not to, but you are right--people need to recognize the number of children they can care for, emotionally and financially. Mothers and families on welfare have on average a much greater number of children than your average family. I think many cases of child abuse stem from parents just not being able to deal with that many kids--Nixmary Brown as an example...I would never agree with your BIL though...I just think more people need to really think about what having kids mean before they have them.

His argument had nothing to do with being able to care for a child...( we agreed- if you can take care of them in any way, then you shouldnt be popping them out)
It was strictly based on overpopulation...

Re: What do you think?
There is definitely a population problem in this world. But I think the bigger problem is lack of education and birth control. In college I did a paper where I found out that the more education a woman had (in third world countries), the fewer children she had.
Also, the Earth has a way of maintaining itself... even with the population control via natural disasters. If you notice, many natural disasters (tsunami) occur in overpopulated areas. Maybe Mother Earth is trying to tell us something.
I agree with your BIL for myself- in that I only want 2 kids. I agree- two of us- two of them. But that is just me. I know plenty of people with families of 3 or 4 kids. I don't think the global population problem will be made too much worse by educated couples in the US having 3 or 4 kids. To each their own.

Re: What do you think?
I think as long as you can care for them, then you are being responsible.
In terms of overpopulation, there are plenty of people out there that are childless by choice (and some have no choice). Find 2 couples on this board & you can have their 2 kids. Problem solved.
