My aunt gave me this whole set because shes moving...

WWYD with this? Strip and restain, or paint? I'd love to whitewash them but i'm not really sure how...any tips?

The original headboard matched the furniture but she got this one custom made and I love it...

Sorry for the icky BB pics...

I'm obviously going to change the hardware...

I'd strip it and restain is darker. Maybe even sand the edges make it look a little distressed. It's a nice set though!

it doesn't look like solid wood, but I would get a really good primer and lightly sand it a bit and then prime and paint it. you can do it a crackle finish and add new handles or knobs. it will look so different.

if its solid wood, you could stain it darker

Yes, new knobs or handles can completely transform a piece.

Where is this furniture going? Your master or a spare room?

I like the idea of whitewashing and changing the nobs

Spare room...I just think its kinda ugly and I think whitewashing would make a HUGE difference! Dh thinks its alot of work to waste on spare room furniture but I think its ugly as is and wouldn't have taken it if I didn't intend to change it!

Since its just for the spare room, try just changing the nobs first and see how it looks. Changing those makes a huuugge difference

Re: What do you recommend doing with this furniture...?

I would just change the hardware - it's really not that bad looking.

I'm with your DH - it's a pain in the balls to paint furniture.

Making sure you sand, prime, wait, paint, wait, another coat, etc... It's so time consuming and this weather is crappy weather to do it in.

A short-cut if you're so inclined - when my mom has my sister's furniture repainted (its been in the fam for YEARS) she sends it to an auto body shop and they spray it in the spray booth - if you know someone you can go that route. It always comes out mint. My mother - pure genius, that one.

I took your advice and changed the hardware and it looks remarkably better...so much so that I might not do anything to it.

FWIW, it is VERY solid wood Chat Icon

Looks good, I would actually just replace the mirror it makes the set look dated.
