we need our last to pay stubs, last years tax return and last 2 months bank statements. That was for WAMU and HSBC (but WAMU we didn't need the bank statements since we have accounts there)

Previous Month paystubs for each of us.
W-2 form from the previous year.
You need to know where all your $$ is - what banks, what type of account (checking, savings, CD)
And also know your assets (Pensions, etc) and what monthly bills you have (re: car bills, stud. loans, etc)

I never needed to provide any of that.
We made an appt to meet with the bank mortgage guy and he told us what to bring. Within a day or two of that meeting we were pre-approved and ready to house hunt with our entire application completed and ready to be activated when we had an offer accepted.

actually every bank I called asked for similar documents.

but how would they know how much you make? They can't get that data from your SOS or a credit check.

i dont know- lol, i told them what we make..
we did a paperless mortgage too- we didnt have to provide any w2's or bank statements..
it was so easy.
maybe because it is our 2nd home. on the first house we had to provide it all.

preapprova, I thought, was just telling them what you make, your down payment, etc.
pre-qualification is when you bring all those documents. If you have any investment statements, I would bring those too.

I think you have these revered. I was pre-approved by my bank, but I had to bring in paperwork for them to tell me what we could afford taxes and house wise.

I just applied for a pre-approval and was able to do it over the phone. Nothing was needed, we just needed to know how much we made, what we own, stocks, etc, and how much we had in a bank. If we wanted a pre-qualification then we needed to bring in the things mentioned above.
