I bought an amazing shearling for about $200 but it didn't last as long as I thought it would - only 4 years or so. Next year I'll be in the market for a new one, I'd love to see what you found!

Um, $200. I'm in the my husband will divorce me range with this one.
it looks kinda like this one:
but in a light beige (kinda like whiskey below)
and you can either button 2 ways, one side over the other, so that only one side ruffles down. or in the middle so that both sides ruffle down.
or you can button it up to your neck.

Re: what do I need to know about buying a shearling?
I bought one at the Coach outlet several years ago for maybe 500 or 600? The retail price was around $1100. It was really worth every penny, the absolute warmest coat EVER... it's like wearing an Ugg over your whole body.
It's chocolate brown and has held up really well over the years. I've had it professionally cleaned at a place that does fur/leather, that's the only annoying thing about it, because the cleaning is $$$$

Re: what do I need to know about buying a shearling?
I have one that is 8 years old that is similar to the one you posted and I love it. It is by Iris Singer and back then it was $1000. It keeps me so warm when it is really cold or windy. I used to wear it to work but now that I am a SAHM, I only wear it when I go out at night.
I really don't know how to tell from a good shearling as opposed to a bad one, though.
Does the one you posted have buttons? Mine has buttons but they fell off and I have been to lazy to get them fixed and I don't know that I can't close it. So it is something to consider if it doesn't have buttons and is more of a swing type coat which it looks like in the picture.

I think that would be a really nice V-Day, or birthday, annivesary (what's coming up ). My jacket happened to be a birthday gift.
