What do I do w/this lawn?
My fiancee and I are first time homeowners so we'll be learning a lot as we go along. We are closing on our house in June.
Three weeks ago when we had the home inspection the lawn was nasty and brown. What do we do w/it to make it green and nice looking for the summer??
I'll try to post a pic of it....but I'm having trouble resizing. Image Attachment(s):

I cant see a pic, but my advice, is to get a lawnmower,...cut it veeeeeeery short, and then spread some Scotts® Turf Builder® With Halts® Crabgrass Preventer
and water it if not every day then every other...and continue to mow once a week...u'll see the changes...
u can also apply lime to it in addition to the above product

Re: What do I do w/this lawn?
It could be the type of grass you have. We have zoysia much of which was until recently straw color from the winter, we thatched and raked and it just started getting green.
Don't cut it too short, too many times or you will shock it.
Get a spreader and get a fertilizer/crab grass killer on it ASAP, it is supposed to go on early spring.
Make sure it gets at least 1" of water a week, one long deep watering per week is enough if you can't water each day (early am being the best time).
Good luck!

I agree with Patti - could be the type of grass. Ours is zoysia and looks ok now, but a few weeks ago was pretty brown. It's a warm-season grass, good for high traffic areas. I think it's lower maintenance than some other grasses.

I just added a picture - it's small - but I think you get the idea.

Re: What do I do w/this lawn?
before you fertilize it, I think you need to have it airated and thatched and then fertilize it

Re: What do I do w/this lawn?
Warning about zoysia.
First off, I LOVE it, it's thick, cushy and VERY green in the summer. It' fairly low maintence, weeds do not really grow through it, and its drought tolerant.
The warning is that it will invade your flower beds as it sends shoots in every direction so you need to protect the beds with edging.

Do you mind me asking how much they charged you to do that?

Re: What do I do w/this lawn?
We paid about 400 but we had plants and trees cut also..
I think its about $150 or so, they power rake it and clean all the dead grass..
We used BP Landscapping in Levittown

Re: What do I do w/this lawn?
We have very dry brittle yellow lawn that I was asking DH about the other day and he says it's b/c of the type of grass. There are spring grasses and fall grasses that turn green according to the time of year and he says you need the right mix of both for it to stay green all the time. Ours turns green but not until later in the summer. So there's really no short cut it has to be reseeded or resodded with the right combination.
