What commands does your dog know?

We spend a good portion of time each day training Brinkley on new commands and reinforcing old commands ones. When I was talking to my Mom, I mentioned that he probably had close to 20 of them down pat already and she thought I was kidding.

I don't think it's that out of the ordinary, they all make our lives easier or are for safety's sake. Nothing 'cute' yet like play dead or anything.

Do you think that's excessive? How many/which commands have you taught your dog?

Brinkley's list:

Sit
Stay
Come
Down
Speak
Shhh
Drop
Up
Off
Take it
Leave it
Pee pee
Poop
Ok go (his 'release' after making him stay before allowing him to eat)
In
Out
Toy
Touch (we're teaching him to ring a bell to alert us when he needs to go out)

We're working on:

Paw
Belly
Stand

Re: What commands does your dog know?

Lilly knows a lot of words - whether or not she actually obeys them depends on what's in it for her.

*sit
*stay
*come
*drop it
*leave it
*up (to get up onto the bed, couch, or into the car)
*uppies (when I need to pick her up, she'll raise up her front legs and either walk on her hind legs or stretch her front ones up my leg so I can grab her by her armpits)
*off
*walk
*Do you have to go out? (we'll ask her this when we know she has to go potty - she'll get so excited and jump into our arms"
*Go peeps
*Go poopies
*under (she burrows under the covers)
*hug (she'll wrap her arms around my neck)
*kiss (she licks the bottom of your nose)

Re: What commands does your dog know?

Cooper's list is embarassingly short.

He knows>>

Sit
Down
Stay
Come (this is dependant upon his mood)
Drop it (as in a toy)
Speak (thanks to my dad Chat Icon)
Grandma's (if you say this he will run to the door b/c that's when he knows he's getting the car, usually to go see my mom)

That's about it.. but we are proud of him and love him anyway Chat Icon

Re: What commands does your dog know?

Does it count if your dog knows them but just does not feel like doing them? Just kidding. The ones he is consistent with are sit, down and wait. We have hand signals for all of those, too. He knows what my husband means when he says "ramp," to try to get him to use a ramp instead of jumping. He knows what "quiet" means but once he starts barking he will probably not stop until he is ready to.

Re: What commands does your dog know?

Charlie knows a few. He is much better at it when there is a toy dangling in front of him but so far he's got

Commands
* Sit
* Lay Down
* Paw
* Go get your toy (he'll go get one from the toy bin and drop it on our lap)
* Do Good Boys (go #2)
* Hugs (he will come up on his hind legs and wrap his arms around our neck)
* No
* Eyes (we have to put ointment in his eyes every night and he will sit still and let us do it - for the most part)

Words he Knows
* Treat
* Mima (dh's mom)
* Pop Pop (dh's dad)
* Uncle Pat
* Grandma
* Mommy
* Daddy

what did you do

Chat Icon

I can hear that one in my mind. Chat Icon

Without intending to, we replaced "go crate" with another command this week. We usually watch tv right before bed and Brinkley lays at our feet. When we shut the tv off, we pet him to wake him up and say "Time to go nite-nite" and he's been just getting up, walking over to his crate, and laying down. Chat Icon

The only thing I love more than him learning a new command we teach him is when he learns one that we didn't. Chat Icon
