What are the benefits of delaying or starting solids?

DD has her 4 month apt. on July 1 and the ped said we will talk about starting her on cereal.

I EBF/Pump with her and Im not sure I want to start her on solids just yet.

What are your feelings on delaying/starting and the pro/cons of both?

Re: What are the benefits of delaying or starting solids?

im not sure of the pros and cons...when i asked my doc if I should start DD on cereal at her 4 month appt he said no wait until 6 months...he then said i COULD start earlier if I wanted but to try and wait...shes sleeping through the night and is satisfied with about 27-30 oz so I dont see any reason to start any earlier then 6 months!

I don't know but I should have asked yesterday - when I asked at our 12wk appt yesterday about cereal, the MD told me she likes to wait until 6months for EBF babies Chat Icon

Starting cereal is to teach them how to eat. Babies can thrive on milk-formula alone. Adding solids is good if your baby is still hungry or like I said you want to start getting her used to eating.
I started @ 4 mnths b/c DD was drinking a lot of formula...
hope that helps

What my old peds told me was introducing cereal early could start the onset of diabetes.

My new peds has cereal started at 4 months.

Re: What are the benefits of delaying or starting solids?

My PED doesn't start solid prior to 6 months cause he believes in teh research that starting solids prior to 6 months increases chances later in life of
-diabetes
-obesity
-allergies

Both my girls started at 6 months without any problems

And both my girls were drinking 36-40 ounces a day from 4-6 months and sleeping through the night since 8 weeks old.

thanks! Im going to wait till 6 months then. I think the reasaon she said we could start at 4 months if we want, was because Nina has started waking hungry 1-2x a night again.

Re: What are the benefits of delaying or starting solids?

Personally, I do not think there is any reason to start them on solids prior to 6 months

Re: What are the benefits of delaying or starting solids?

The AAP suggests waiting so that baby's digestive system is healthier...it also states that you should wait to avoid allergies

Re: What are the benefits of delaying or starting solids?

i was breastfeedign and still started DS on cereal at like 3.5/4months i believe. I listened to my mom on this one and I am glad I did. He learned to eat with a spoon which helps with motor skills. And he slept longer at night.

If she is waking up hungry increase her milk intake. I personally do not think that giving cereal poses any real problems. Well all babies are different though so I can't speak for everyone. My DS is perfectly healthy and like i said in my previous post he started cereal at 3.5/4months.

Re: What are the benefits of delaying or starting solids?

I wanted to wait at least until 5 months to start solids but DD was really really hungry and was not satisfied with her bottles alone. She was getting 8oz bottles and crying for more when she finished them!

If your DD is thriving and does not seem extra hungry there's no reason to rush to solids.

Research shows that these problems can pop up LATER in life (allergies, obesity, diabetes), hence the reason for delay. It's not an immediate reaction that is the concern since most babies don't develop diabetes, food allergies and obesity while infants.

Re: What are the benefits of delaying or starting solids?

We started Chelsea on solids at 4 1/2 months. The doctor gave us the ok and said mainly at this point it is just teaching her how to eat with a spoon. I love it. I feed her once a day and we bond over oatmeal and pears. Also she had serious constipation issues and since starting food she have been very regular. Chat Icon

Gagging issues when they start later. We had a very difficult time because we started Joseph late.

Long term, no issues.

Short term, major PITA & lots of stress associated with eating.
