Westchester School Districts?

I'm trying to get an understanding of the best public school districts in Westchester. This is the list I have accumulated:

Bronxville
Scarsdale
Edgemont
Chappaqua

Dobbs Ferry
Rye
Harrison
Pleasantville
Mamaroneck
Irvington
Croton-on-Hudson

Pelham

Of the ones above, it seems like Scarsdale, Bronxville and Chappaqua have the best reputations. And maybe that Pelham is a bit below the others?

Can you give me your impressions? I grew up on LI and am currently in Boston so I'm clueless on Westchester!

Any other Westchester towns with good commutes to NYC that I've missed?

Re: Westchester School Districts?

You are right on the money with the school districts. One thing to be careful of though is property taxex in each of those areas.

For example, Chappaqua is much higher then Rye or Dobbs Ferry...

Just stay away from Yonkers.

Good Luck

I am not too sure about Dobbs Ferry. I know a couple of people from there and they all went to private school.

My BIL lives in Eastchester and picked it for the school district. They do say it's not as good as Bronxville though.

Bronxville has a great reputation. My mom lives there and loves it, the village is very cute too.

I'm getting dizzy with all the options!

Any sense of towns where there are lots of nanny-free stay at home moms?

Re: Westchester School Districts?

Hi Calla! I live in Chappaqua and love love love it.

The school system is off the charts terrific!
The town itself is a mid size town with terrific restaurants and shops on the main street...
About the people...Everyone I met has been so nice.
In general, The town is young and well-off, but the people aren't flashy or showy. Most of the women are down to earth SAHM's; most of the men are upwardly mobile guys. Everyone values their $$ though.

eta: We looked in Scarsdale and thought you could get more for your $$ in Chappaqua. Also, we are right on the train line- 45 minutes into Grand Central.
Our taxes are a little higher than much of Westchester due to the school system but, like anywhere else, I have friends who pay $12k and friends who pay $45,000 (new construction) ...

Add Rye Brook to your search- Blind Brook School Systems and Armonk- Byram Hills (although the latter, IMO, is showy- think Maserati's, 8,000 sq foot homes, huge rings, and 5 car garages).

HTH!

Scarsdale and Rye are expensive areas; so I think you will find a lot of nannys in those towns actually.

I technically live in Scarsdale, and I'm a SAHM - but I see Nannys all over the place, esp when I take my son to Gymboree or music together. Most times the nannys are with the children they care for at these classes. Mind you, I wouldn't consider myself a 'Scarsdale' resident per se, as I don't live in the village (I'm in a co-op off a main road bordering Hartsdale, and I will add that I am hardly well off Chat Icon) but it's definitely a beautiful area if you can afford it with a wonderful school district. Where I live puts me in the "Edgemont" school district which is rated very well (though I do not plan to be in this area once my children are of school age)

Bronxville is also Chat Icon but you might have a better mix there of SAHMs, as it borders a few areas that are somewhat more reasonable to live in

Eastchester might be a bit more of what you are looking for in terms of the SAHM 'scene' if you will - plus it is a very nice area.

Not quite as familiar with some of the other areas you posted , as I've always lived in Yonkers/Scarsdale/Hartsdale etc - so I really can't comment too much on those

GL!
