West Nile

On Friday, my teenage dd and I went hiking at Connetquot Lake State Park. I didn't know that a few days prior they had found West Nile infected mosquitos there. About 2 miles into the trail we were being eaten alive. We managed the rest of the trail, but my daughter is completely bitten all over. No joke, she must have at least 50 bites and I'm freaking out.

Should I be this worried? I've been reading up on it. About 80% of people who contract it don't even know they have it. But the other 20% get neurologic symptoms.

Why didn't we just stay home!?! Chat Icon

I don't know much about it, but I would think if you are both mostly healthy then you wouldn't have much to worry about. Maybe call her doctor and ask for things you should look out for. It stinks you got bit up, but I wouldn't let it stop me from doing things. I'm sure you'll both be fine!

Re: West Nile

I was infected with West Nile back in 2003 or 2004. I was completely asymptomatic. It was discovered only bc I got very sick with something else that led to them running lots of tests. I was completely fine!

Thank you both. I know I am worrying unnecessarily, I guess its the mom in me. Glad to hear you were okay.

Re: West Nile

I think in general, if you are otherwise healthy and not immuno compromised, you would be ok even if you did contract it.
