Welcome to Motherhood??
when my dd was in the hospital on tuesday, mil walked into the room and said this to me. "welcome to motherhood." then she kind of laughed.
i said, i was inducted into this a long time ago when DD was born and was in the NICU for 5 weeks. So i've earned my stripes, so to speak.
it got under my skin b/c it's like she's saying that your not a mom until you see your child hurt. i know she meant no harm and sometimes says things b/c she feels she has to say something.
i don't get it.
thoughts?

I don't know her obviously so its hard to know her true motives. But as an outsider it sounds to me as if it was just something lighthearted to say...it makes the situation a little less difficult (although it may not seem it to the mom!) to say "welcome to motherhood" because a phrase like that is more to reinforce that these things happen to all moms at some point, and its a tough part of being a mom.
Thats just my thoughts on it and I would not take it to heart

I'm sorry.... that's a crock.
Every time I talk about something to a mom, all I hear is.... Welcome to motherhood.....
I am tired at this point of hearing this, and know that I have heard it app 1/100000000000000000 times that I'm going to hear it.
You have def earned your stripes, and I'm sorry that your MIL said that to you.....

see, I'm torn between she meant it to lighten the mood and that she was just trying to get under my skin.
she can be like that.
the more i think about it, the more i think she was just saying it to say something.

it's hard to infer her meaning without knowing her, but assuming that she isn't a malicious person, i would think she was uncomfortable in the situation and just said it to fill the space. she also may have thought that "normalizing" the situation would make you feel better, i.e. all mothers have their kids in the hospital at one point or another, it's a rite of passage, etc.
but that doesn't mean that her comment can't get under your skin. MILs have a unique way of doing that
