Weird Etsy purchase/transaction-- ever heard of this? long, sorry!
I ordered a rainbow dress for DD's 3rd b-day party. Seller is in Australia. Contacted her way back in mid-March, but didn't get all the info to her (measurements) until mid-April (she was on vacation anyway); she contacted me on April 26 saying dress was made and she'll ship once she got payment; I paid via PayPal on April 27.
I actually forgot about the whole thing...she emailed me on May 5th saying she felt horrible, she found the package when they moved furniture around, she thought she had shipped it, she kept saying how bad she felt (I hadn't even asked her about it at this point); told me that "Please accept my sincere apologies and i would understand if you wished to have your money refunded ....please let me know if u would still like the dress or prefer your money back [i will ofcourse add in a free item with the dress as an apology for my stuff up if you still want the dress]"
I write back on May 6 saying no problem, if she can ship the dress out that day, I'd still take it....didn't hear from her, so on May 11 I emailed her and simply asked if the dress had shipped...she said yes, apologized for not getting back to me.
So today, May 13, I get an email from PayPal saying that the seller is refunding me $40 (I paid $44 with shipping from Australia); I contact them via Etsy to verify it was them (I know there are a lot of PayPal scams and I've never dealt with a refund before) and to ask if the dress ever shipped (b/c she said it had shipped). The husband writes back right away and says "Yes we did. We felt that the error was entirely our fault and even tho it has been shipped we have no idea how long it will take and I think you needed item for a specific date. So given all this we thought you should get the item and refund. We apologize and hope parcel turns up very soon."
Is this not bizarre? I don't need the dress until early-July, but I don't think I ever told her that. And I never even complained about it taking so long, or the shipping delay, etc....I was actually REALLY lax with them, since I knew I had some time and I just didn't want to stress about it.
How could they not know how long it should take to ship from Australia to here? And why would they refund $40 when I paid $44? Their shipping charge was $9 from Australia.
This is just weird to me b/c I never even complained/got annoyed with them at all.
I should feel safe then to click the "claim your money now" tab from their email via PayPal? I always get nervous of PayPal scams.

Maybe there were other orders that they took around the same time with the same delays that did complain so they are just refunding everyone's money? Weird, nonetheless!

Honestly, it sounds like they were just being courteous and good retailers. They probably did feel badly. I wouldn't assume a scam of any sort from that.

As long as you log on through your own link to paypal (not the one in the email), I think you're fine.
It could be just a huge customer service move on their part but if not, they still owe you money.

Oh, good idea. I am clueless when it comes to PayPal. I just logged in to my PayPal account and I don't see a "refund pending" or anything. It shows the $44 I paid them on 4/27 but nothing else (I haven't used the account in a long time).
The email that I received is from "[email protected] on behalf of (their email address apparently)".
And then I logged onto Etsy and contacted them through "conversations" asking if they issued me a refund and explained my wariness of PayPal schemes, and he wrote back (almost immediately) saying yes, it was them.
I'm such a chicken, I'm still nervous

I can see why you'd be skeptical, but as long as you log into your paypal acct properly, there shouldn't be any issues with the refund. Hopefully you get the dress soon!!

Re: Weird Etsy purchase/transaction-- ever heard of this? long, sorry!
Ok, maybe this is why I can't see a "refund pending" or something on PayPal....
PayPal account is DH's email address....my Etsy account has my email address. When I buy things, the Etsy "conversations" go to my email, but the PayPal payments are done through DH's email (just how it is since he had a PayPal account already and it wouldn't let me assign the same credit card to another PayPal account or something like that )
So the email I got from PayPal says: To claim your money, sign up for an account using this email address: (myemailaddress-- where the email was sent to), or, if you already have PayPal account, just add this email address to your account.
Once you've added and confirmed the email address, the payment will show up in your PayPal account.
Thanks, PayPal
I am so confused/neurotic

No, totally better to be safe than sorry!!! I just felt like if I was selling something and I forgot to send it I would totally refund the money as a good faith gesture in hopes that the buyer would purchase from me again. Well, I'd do it anyway because I would feel it was right. Anyway, glad you got your money back!

I totally agree with you, I just thought it was SO odd because I never nagged her, never was annoyed/rude to her, never even bothered her....was perfectly understanding with her delays and explanations. Good customer service, definitely-- but the whole refund thing made me anxious (not that THEY were trying to rip me off somehow, just a random internet scam, KWIM)?
