Weight Maximums on toys??
I'm looking to buy a walker for my 10 month old son and so many of them, including the one we like (Chicco) have maximum weight "recommendations" of 26 pounds. He's almost 25pounds now!!
My husband says they probably allow for some leighway when determining those maximums anyway.
What do you think? There is one that has a 30 pound max, but we don't like it as much.
What would you do?

I'd say that the maximum is the maximum suggested weight. I wouldn't disregard it.

Yes I agree
A 'max weight limit' to me translates to: Anything over this weight won't be our fault should there be an injury because you should have known better.
Now does it mean you CAN'T use it over that weight? No, but do so at your own risk.

I wouldn't ignore the weight limits. At that age I can't imagine you would get much use out of a walker anyways. Not worth any risk involved for such short use. My kids would have flipped out being trapped in a toy at that age. But my kids weight gain drastically slowed down by 10 months(may have slowed down from walking), so it may be awhile before he hits the weight limits.

I can't see what you would need a walker for at that age. I would skip it. I have 9 month old who has been in it since 5 months, and we are just about to retire it, because he is far too heavy for it, and it has a 25 lb weight limit.

I was always against walkers because of the dangers. So, DS has been in those stationary exersaucer-type things. But we felt he would appreciate the mobility and decided to try a friend's walker and he LOVES it. I kind of feel bad I deprived him of that mobility. His main method of mobility right now is either rolling or the army crawl, where he just uses his arms to pull himself to get where he wants to go (DH calls it the Zombie crawl... lol). He also does great walking when we're holding him by the hands (a li'l wobbly, but he loves it!). We thought a walker would build his leg muscles up more and give him a taste of mobility. I think he would still get good use out of it - if it wasn't for some of those weight restrictions.
I don't know WHAT to do... maybe I'll just get the one with the 30lb weight limit.

Re: Weight Maximums on toys??
i agree with people about the weight limits being important, but a pound or two over isn't a huge deal to me. And my ds didn't walk until 14 months so we got a ton of use out of walker and around we go til about 13 months... id get the one with the higher limit if possible...jmo

Thank you... at least I feel like it won't be a total waste. Even if he only gets 1-2 months out of it, how much he loves it will be worth it to me.
He was just about 24 pounds last month. I think he's been slimming down from rolling around so much, so I'm thinking he'll only be up to 26-27 pounds by the time he starts walking on his own, so maybe I'll go with the BETTER walker that has the 26.5 lb limit... especially since it's a maximum weight "recommendation".
Stinks because even his stationary exersaucers right now have a 25 pound weight limit, but he loves them so much that we couldn't bear not letting him in those! Plus I wouldn't know where else to put him! lol

Why don't you get a push walking toy? That's what we got for DS around that age.

Re: Weight Maximums on toys??
The kolcraft tiny steps walker is a great one that converts into a pushing/standing walker. Max is 26lbs. Personally if my Ds was 24 and the limit was 26 I would feel comfortable using it until like 29lbs. I get what everyone else is saying but that would be my real life opinion on it you know? Plus, like you said mobility slows down the weight gain. I would think there's no way he would gain more than 4/5lbs by the time he walks.

I'd love to know which walkers you were looking into getting...I have a big baby, too....and I feel so bad always keeping her in the exersaucer where she can't move around!
