Weight loss concerns
Hi ladies,
Our DD has lost quite a bit of weight over the last month ( 11 oz). Her weight gain had been between 1 - 2 pds per month up until about a month ago when we began the transition form a super high calorie formula to milk and to stage 3 and table foods. She has acid reflux and spits up about 5 times per day. Some times she spits up an entire meal 2 hours after feeding. I dont know if the omeprazole is delaying her digestion and causing these spitups and if its makings things worse rather than better. I dont know if we should take her off the med, increase the dosage or change to another med. We have an appt with her ped and GI this week. She cant afford to lose anymore weight and to wither away. We are very concerned and at our wit's end. We are tempted to put her back on the high calorie formula. She's only drinking 3 or 4 oz of milk per bottle feeding along with 3 meals at about 300 calories per meal. We are trying to feed her 1200 calories per day, but all her spit ups especially the ones that occur well after her feedings are making this impossible. We really could use some good advice and help with this very difficult situation. Thank you!

Re: Weight loss concerns
Have you considered a dairy and/or soy intolerance? There is no medical test for it, since it's not a true allergy. It's an Immunoglobulin G (IgG) response, whereas an allergy is an immune reaction or an IgE response. What struck a chord with me was that she is only eating 3 or 4 ounces at a time. It may be hurting her and causing inflammation in her GI track or elsewhere. The only definitive method is to eliminate the suspect for at least 2 weeks. Doctors are not well trained in this area, so if you are running into brick walls with conventional treatment...then elimination is the easiest, most effective strategy to "diagnosing" an intolerance. You may need to request a prescription for dairy free, soy free formula (Elecare I think...not sure though). Anyway....keep at it. You'll find the solution soon enough.

Re: Weight loss concerns
I would definitly try different medicines or other remedies for the reflux. Call up your ped or GI dr and see what they can recommend. We wound up trying many different things till we found the right combination of medicine and foods for our DD's reflux.
