weight gain question - should i be concerned?

im 25w. i lost 3lbs in the first tri. ive gained a lot in the second. as of today im up 22lbs Chat Icon . when i went to my last doctor appt the nurse made me weight twice cause she thought she wrote it down wrong the first time. she mentioned it was a lot since the last appt, but she also realized it was 5wks and not 4wks so she said it wasnt too bad.

anyway so i got on my home scale today (which i find to be much more accurate than the dr scale), and it says im up 5 more lbs since last time i weighed which was maybe 8 days ago Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon . ive been eating well, but i didnt think i was eating crazy enough to gain 5lbs in that amount of time. i have the 1hr glucose on the 14th but i was thinking of calling today and seeing if i can move it up cause now im a little worried.

im not at all a worrier so im just wondering if this is this normal at this point in pregnancy and i should just let it go, or is it a precursor for GD or something that is worth calling the doctor over?
TIA!

if you are worried and it will ease your mind, call the dr. Is it possible it is just because you are using 2 different scales (the one at the dr. and the one at home)? My home scale is about 2-3 pounds off from my dr.'s scale. Weighing in at different times of the day?

im only basing the 5lbs gain on my home scale measurements. i dont even pay attention to the doctors scale since its usually off and they always weigh me with clothes on Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: weight gain question - should i be concerned?

Your body is going to gain what it needs for both you and baby. Up 22lbs at 25 weeks is not bad, most people average a lb a week in their pregnancy, but everyone is different.

If you are eating healthy and not over doing it on cravings you should be fine. I gained a lot in my first trimester because I was so nauseas that the only thing I could eat was bagels! Second trimester I gained only a few lbs and now in the third I am starting to pack it on again but I believe its the ridiculous amounts of swelling. My dr told me a healthy weight gain for me would be 35-45 lbs and Im pretty much on target for that now at 37w.

If the doctors were concerned, they definitely would say something to you. Keep up the healthy eating and you will be fine! Chat Icon

i'm up 19lb total at 23 weeks, so I think you are totally fine. I was really depressed at my weigh in because i gained 7 since my last appt, but my dr said it's totally fine.

she actually said if i'm worried i can cut out sweets and complex carbs but i don't have to, and that when I go for my glucose test we'll see what the results are (she thinks they'll be fine) and if I fail, we can talk diet then

she also said weight gain tends to slow down at the end.

I think at this point you should be gaining a pound per week.

You could call and ask the dr.

Sometimes I just feel your body adds on what it needs to and it's not always best to pay such close attention to the numbers and even at times what the dr says in regards to the weight gain.

Other times it could be from something else.

My friend who had GD was losing and gaining... it was going back and forth... and her biggest problem was that she was carrying very small. That was the main factor in why they tested her early for it... and sure enough she had it.

You are FINE!
I am like you, I gain nearly nothing in my first trimester (with DS i gained 1lb) but in my 2nd HALF I pack it on.
I gained 50lbs with DS and I was up 40 at my 34 week appt this time around.

I also have big babies (DS was 9lbs 14oz) but either way I have had 2 different OB practices (1 with DS who retired and now another with 4 different drs) and no one has ever mentioned weight to me. And I didnt have GD either time.

Every body's body is different, just as every baby is different.

Re: weight gain question - should i be concerned?

I tend to gain a lot the first few weeks and then slow down....this month (I'm 25 weeks) I've gained a total of already 3lbs which is my biggest weight gain since the first tri...I feel like this may have happened with DD as well, I think around this time they have a huge growth spurt bc I do see my belly popping a lot more than it has!!!!Chat Icon

For a moment I thought you said you gained a total of 3 lbs in your 25 weeks! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Same here! I gain a lot in my first tri then it slows down. same thing happened to DS. I'm a light eater and small to begin with. Just adding some extra calories I gained fast the first tri then it evened out
I remember with DS I lost 2 lbs in the 3rd tri b/c there was no room anymore. I wasn't too hungry and if I was I got full fast

Re: weight gain question - should i be concerned?

Ugh, first of all put your scale away. Your body is going to gain what it thinks it needs, whether you eat normally or not.

There's a certain point in your pregnancy where you will gain a lot in a short period of time. I called the Dr's office when I thought I gained too much, they told me exactly what I told you. They are on top of it. I never had GD, but gained a ton. Genetics has a lot to do with what you are going to gain. Basically don't freak out.

Re: weight gain question - should i be concerned?

Honestly, I gained almost 60lbs when I was pregnant with my DS. Never had GD and he was born perfectly healthy.

I wouldn't worry about it for a second.
