Weight estimation???
How accurate is it?? They told me at 34 weeks that the baby was a little over 4 lbs. The tech said that was a little low, but my Dr. told me that was perfect because of the Gestational Diabetes. The tech also said that we should have around a 7/7 -7/14 pound baby.
So confusing... Any answers, thoughts, or ideas??? Thanks

Re: Weight estimation???
I don't know about accuracy, but I think 4 pounds with only 6 weeks to go sounds low for a woman with GD, but it sounds right for somebody who does NOT have GD. If you do have it and your sugar levels have been well controlled, it could be accurate. If so, you've done great managing the sugar level. I don't have GD and they said that my baby was about 6 pounds at 35 weeks.

Re: Weight estimation???
I am almost 33 weeks (do not have GD) and my Dr. told me last week that my baby weighs approximately 4 1/2 lbs. I don't how how accurate that is. He was pressing down really hard on my stomach and that's when he told me how much my baby weighs.

Re: Weight estimation???
I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and have lost weight since then due to the diet they have me on. I can't remember the ounces she said, I just remember 4 pounds. It was a little over 4, maybe 4 1/2... Now I am nervous, I hope my baby is not too small. They were all concerned about the baby going to get too big...

Re: Weight estimation???
i have been told it has to do with how good the measurements are at any given time. to get an "accurate estimate" one needs to get good measurements of both the circumference of the head and torso. depending on how the little one is positioned, these measurements are hard to get and can be way off...
i also have been told by my dr. the bigger they get, the more difficult it is to get the measurements and predict weight with accuracy.

Re: Weight estimation???
Try not to worry, the nurse prob said it was a little low cause with GD they expect you to have a big baby.
A baby born 7- 7 1/2 pounds is very normal range.
My dr told me normal range starts at 6lbs.

Re: Weight estimation???
The baby gains alot at the end so I wouldn't be worried.
They say the sonos can be off by 1lb either way.... They told me 9lbs 3 ounces on Tues, I delivered on Sat and he was 9lbs 6.5 ounces..
I blame the extra 3.5 ounces on Thanksgiving!

Re: Weight estimation???
10 minutes before my csection they gave me one last sonogram to make sure a csection was definitly necessacy anyway, they told me that the baby would be 7 and 1/2 pounds. and she was 9 pounds even. so its only a guesstimate when they predict the weight. i would not worry.

Re: Weight estimation???
It really depends on the tech doing the sono and how "good" they are at doing it!
All I can say is that with my son he measuring "big" the whole time. At my last sono, 2 days before I went into labor they told me he was weighing in at 9lb 12oz, give or take a pound. Well, 2 days later he weighed in at 10lb 12oz, so for me they were completely accurate. I think at my 32 week sono they said he was measuring over 5lbs at the time. I didn't have GD. Good luck!
