If you were bringing only one pay check into the house...for 2 adults and one child, how much do you think is a decent amount per week.

No mortgage..new car payment though. Regular bills overall.

Mmm my thing is take all the bills add them up and then divide by how many checks you get in a month - that is the least to exist money then add a buffer/savings.

Do you pay rent or anything? I think it really depends on a lot of things. DH and I would need to be bringing in at least $1,000 a week, but that is because our rent is really really high Chat Icon

I would think everything to be paid out should be 25% or less of what you bring in.

So if weekly bills are $250 then you should bring in $1,000.

I agree with this.

BIL needs a lot more $$ just to get by than we do...

It's impossible to answer specifically for someone else's case not knowing details.

I agree! Everyone has very different bills.

Student loans
Cell phones
Internet
TV
Home heating
Electric
Food
Car payments
Gas
Commuting Expenses
and the list goes on and on and on

Re: Weekly paycheck with only one check coming into the house.

After I pay for our health insurance, I bring in just under $500.00 a week and that covers basically everything but our mortgage and taxes right now.

We've had to dip into savings for that since DH is not bringing in money from his business right now.

I also have a new car payment. I hope things turn around soon.

I am about ready to put our house up for sale and move into the middle of nowhere to live off the land. Chat Icon

As the others said it really depends but with NYC/ LI being so expensive I imagine it would be hard to survive on $1000 after taxes.

I agree....most people would faint if they saw what I need a month to "get by" and it's just me....

I pay about $2400 a month towards my debt

Chat Icon I used to not even make that in a month my first year after college

If we were living on 1 salary with a child, I would say we would need at least $3000 a month net with what our bills are. And that would be just scraping by - there would not be money for any extras...

I bring home $4000 a month (after taxes/health insurance/paying into retirement), and that would be fine for us if we had no rent/mortgage. Or depending on rent/mortgage; not clear on what your housing situation is.

Re: Weekly paycheck with only one check coming into the house.

I think it all depends on your family. We bought our home 14 years ago so our mortgage is not as high as others. Our home is smaller than many so our utilities are lower.
It also depends on your lifestyle. We don't have a large family and need to buy gifts all the time. I get a Christmas bonus and only use that for gifts. We don't spend thousands of dollars on Christmas gifts. We use the 5th week of every 3 months for savings and any bills. We use our taxes for the kids camps, vacation and anything else that we need.
