Weaning question

I am getting a little ahead of myself but being that my baby will be here in 4 weeks, I want to get some info

I plan to wean DD before I go back to work (when she is 12 weeks)......While I am breastfeeding, I plan to substitute bottled breast milk for a breastfeeding a few times a day after a few weeks of EBF....

When I want to wean her to formula, how is this process done....how long should it take to wean from BM to formula? Fior instance, do I start at, let's say week 8 and just substitute one feeding with formula, do that for a few days and then substitute another feeding with formula, and so on until she is totally weaned? I want to know when I should start doing this so she is completely weaned by the time I go back to work.....I still may BF in the morning and at night when I start back at work but I am not sure about that.....

Thanks girls....get used to me, I will have ALOT of questions in the coming weeks Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Weaning question

I didn't have a process, I just winged it. I introduced formula somewhere between 1-2 months. I think the first few bottles were a blend of formula and BM, but I'm not sure thats necessary. Ella took BM or formula interchangeably.

Re: Weaning question

i bf at nights so that i wouldn't have to worry about making a bottle. i introduced formula during the day, one or two feedings a week. that also allowed my dh to take part in her feedings and gave me a few minutes for myself. you can start at any point you feel you are ready.

Thanks. I also saw somewhere that you can just reduce the amount of time of the breast feedings and then use formula to fill the baby up....gradually reduce the amount of time at the breast over 2 weeks until they are totally weaned. I guess this is an option as well as substituting a breast milk feeding for a formula feeding. Chat Icon
