Weaning a toddler off the boob- HELP!!!
My son is 28 months and still nursing!! I am DONE, I've been done for a while but he is so attached to it! He needs it to fall asleep at night and if I'm home he still wants it throughout the day (If I'm working, he is totally fine without it, which just confirms its a comfort thing).
I don't feel comfortable stopping him cold turkey but I don't know what to do.
Any tips or advice for a smooth, painless weaning will be greatly appreciated!!

marie is there anyone around that can come over just to put him to sleep at night? This way your boob isn't actually there. Maybe a few straight consistent nights of that will work. As far as daytime goes, no advice...maybe just simple redirection?
Good luck!

Re: Weaning a toddler off the boob- HELP!!!
I don't have advice but great job going for so long!!! DS is 20 months old and I'll be weaning him from the boob later this summer. I would try to get him to fall asleep w/o nursing (maybe nurse earlier in the evening before bedtime) and get that down pat before weaning for real. I'd also restrict nursing to only one or two times per day, then when that's established, go with the "don't ask, don't offer" approach. If he doesn't ask, don't nurse! I'm starting to do that - although he always seems to throw in a "babas" request at the very last minute! Maybe look on Kellymom.com to see if they have advice.

There's no one! My parents live 30 minutes away, and they watch him 40+ hrs/week as it is for free. I don't feel comfortable asking them to drive an hr round trip at night. And his father lives in NY, so he's not able to help!
I try re-directing him as much as possible but more than likely a temper tantrum will ensue. He wants what he wants when he wants it- i didn't expect anything less from MY kid

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately he asks all the time- and its pitiful- he'll even throw in a pretty please for good measure! I NEVER offer and haven't for months! I just hope to do this gently!!
to you as well for going so long!!

I only nursed Aidan until he was 15 months and Jullian has just weaned himself. I agree with distraction. Aidan used to literally pick up my shirt and attempt to self serve. I had to just distract him with other things and one day he cried a bit. Kudos to you for nursing so long.

Re: Weaning a toddler off the boob- HELP!!!
I wish I could help. Dd is 21 months and will not stop nursing. She nurses all night, first thing in th morning ad at nap time. I have tried redirection and others putting her to sleep but she always wakes asking for it. She speaks in full sentences so dh says if she can ask for it she needs to be weaned. But she won;t give it up. We don't do cio so I just keep praying she decided to self wean soon. Ds has been telling her she has to stop because the new baby will need the milk but I'm not pregnant so I have no idea where he is getting that from I am half tempted to put something ill tasting on my nipples to help entice her so stop but I am not sure even that would help.

OMG- I am in the same exact boat!! My DS also wants it all night long, and I don't do CIO either!! He also asks for it, and will resort to begging with pretty please!
I also considered buying the stuff they put on your nails to make you stop buying them and to tell him my milk went sour but I feel like thats a little harsh. i am just at my wits end and don;t forsee him weaning himself anytime soon!!
If you find something that works, please let me know and I will do the same!!

Re: Weaning a toddler off the boob- HELP!!!
Have you tried letting him rest on you so he's close and trying a pacifier? Dds 2 yrs and i'm on day 4 of no bfing. When I was cutting out the night time session that worked 75 % of the time. She goes in with no paci now. The am one lingered forever. Finally I had to do chocolate milk...it's been the only thing that's worked. Hth!
