We have an appt for a patio estimate tomorrow!

Thank you Chrissy/dbleplay17 and Jen/JldDolphin for your recommendation! He's coming tomorrow afternoon to take a look and give us some ideas.

We're doing Cambridge pavers in this type of pattern:

The colors we're thinking will be primarily gray and blue with some accent pavers in blue/orange. Our house is light gray, so we thought those would look nice.

People keep telling me to get them set in cement so they don't shift over time. I don't know how much that's going to raise the quote, I guess we'll see. We also need four steps down from the house and possibly a pathway to the side/front of the house and stone planters if we can afford it.

To be able to use my backyard to entertain, or just relax in private... Ahhh I can't wait! Chat Icon

Oh how quickly our minds change. Chat Icon

Fernando couldn't make it the other day so we had our appointment last night. We measured and it's about 570 square feet including the patio and the walkway to the front of the house.

I was under the impression that Cambridge paving stones had color through and through and that Nicolock had just the top 3/8 inch. Fernando said it's the opposite and that's what the brochures say too. They're both the same price through him so we just have to choose the best one and the best colors.

Fernando said we could mix and match different colors, so we're looking at a 2 or 3 color combination. There's a Nicolock dealer right by us in St. James so we're going to go over today and look at all the colors, but specifically the Rustico (non tumbled) series in these main colors:

Marble Blend (to match the house)

Granite City (to contrast the lighter gray)

Bayberry Blend (to provide some color and compliment the gray)

He quoted me for the patio/walkway and a separate price for the stairs which will be almost HALF the price of the total cost of the patio! Chat Icon Our house is 30+ inches off the ground so we'll need four steps and that's pretty time consuming with the coping on the edges.

Then there's the wood deck that needs to be demo'd and hauled away. Another $1000. for that. Chat Icon We're going to check into Smithtown's rules on that and see if we can dispose of it ourselves. He said he would demo it for free if we want but we would have to have it hauled away and dumped - that, apparently, is where the major cost comes in.

If we can't dispose of it through our town dump at a minimum of cost, I'm going to talk to my Dad about it, he has a big pickup truck, and see if he has any ideas on what we can do.

If anyone else has done this and has suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

I'll post details here for those who FM'd me, but I'll keep the pricing private so shoot me a message if you are considering Fernando and would like to know.

Last bit of news... Although the job would take less than a week, he's not available until June to start. I guess my idea of a Memorial Day family gathering is out! Oh well.

Thanks for reading! Chat Icon

I love that picture, where did you find it? We are having a new patio put in our backyard in a few weeks and we are so excited as well. I keep going back and forth between Nicolock and Cambridge, the colors are very similar in person and you hear pros and cons about both. Just an FYI about cementing the pavers, our guy is ICPI certified and your pavers will not be waranteed if they use cement. You can check out the ICPI website for more info and to see who you are using is certified, I never knew this either. I learned this after meeting with several installers.

I found it on the Cambridge website, they have 160 of them! Chat Icon

It really helps to get ideas, I loved looking through them. Thanks for the information on the cement. I don't know what ICPI is but I'm going now to look and see what I can learn. I'll ask him about it tomorrow. Thanks Robin! Chat Icon

Ours is almost done. This is what we went with:

But a little less tan and more gray with the 90 degree herringbone pattern and same border.

It looks amazing! Worth every penny.

Re: We have an appt for a patio estimate tomorrow!

Our Cambridge pavers were not set in cement but a cement foundation was laid then the pavers were put on top so they wont shift over time as the ground settles.

Good luck! I cant wait to see the finished product!Chat Icon

Jess, I really love that picture and wish I could have done those colors. They wouldn't look right with my house I think. I can't wait to see your finished product! Chat Icon

Lisa, I'll ask him about that tomorrow too. Thank you for the suggestion. Chat Icon
