water softeners

Does anyone have a Culligan, or other brand, water softener? What do you think of it? Does it really help with hard water build up? I have very hard water where I live and I regularly have to pick the grit out of my shower head and faucets. I'm thinking a water softener is the way to go. Thanks for any input!

Re: water softeners

I have the low level softener from sears (kenmore) it does wonders for the way our water feels, smells etc. It is also much better for the pipes.

Re: water softeners

I've had one that I installed myself about 10 years ago (I mainly got it because my brand-new dark blue truck was all spotted after I "cleaned" it in the driveway.. Chat Icon Chat Icon ).

It's definitely a great item to have. There is no more calcification on the showerheads, the clothes come out much better in the laundry, the water tastes better, I feel cleaner when I'm done with my shower.

I get the bags of salt from BJs. I actually just picked up 10 bags on Saturday. A 40lb bag lasts a few weeks or so (the tank holds about 6 bags worth), depending on water usage. It's like $5 a bag.
