Please help me with our Washington DC itinerary. We are going the last weekend in August- taking train and arriving around noon on Friday, and leaving around 3:00 on Monday. Staying at Omni Shoreham. I expect we will spend a lot of time at the national mall/museums and monuments, but what else should we see? I haven't been in years and don't really know my way around and how far things are from each other. Boys are 9,8, and 3. Older ones are into history. I don't want to overplan but I would like a loose idea of what area to concentrate on each day. Any tips are appreciated!

Walk Georgetown. Go to Georgetown cupcakes or baked and wired. Be prepard to wait in line but so worth it. Have dinner at Filomena. See if you can get a tour of the White House...you have to email your Congressman.

Filomena is my favorite Italian restaurant. The ambiance is a bit strange but the lobster cardinal is to die for! It was supposedly Bill Clinton's favorite dish.
Filo Mare is a nice brunch spot and right on the water. Tackle Box on M St has good lobster rolls. Your kids may like the Boomerang Pirate Cruise. It leaves from Georgetown. You get a nice scenic boat ride and it has pirates for the kids. Duck Tours may also be fun for the kids.
I would allocate a day to walk around the Mall and monuments. My kids like the Museum of Natural History and Air and Space Museum best. White House is probably an obvious visit as well.
The Building Museum has a new beach exhibit that has been recently popular in DC. I have yet to go but plan to go soon.
