Does anyone have any tips for a Washington DC trip this summer. DD (8) is very interested in all things President so we thought it might be a nice trip. Any tips from hotels, food, attractions would be great. Thanks!!

Re: Washington DC
sorry i don't have hotel reco's but i will say the last time i toured the mall i made sure to go to the national archives to see the Constitution. it was awesome. you have to wait on line and they only allow a certain amount of people at a time in the hall, but it was fabulous. i wouldn't miss it.
also the new MLK monument is wonderful; just a walk around all the monuments are great.

Re: Washington DC
Make reservations to national sites NOW. I really loved the tour where money was printed.

When I was 8 my favorite thing in DC were the first ladies dresses at the Smithsonian......and at 30 it still is!
I would check the exhibits at all of the Smithsonian museums and choose what you want to see, in addition to the Archives. Also, Ford's Theater and the house where Lincoln died.

We were in DC last year, and we stayed at the Dupont Circle Hotel right smack in the middle of Dupont Circle. It worked out great, because we were able to hop on the metro and didn't have to take our car out until we left. Our DD was 2, so we couldn't and didn't do much but please do make the reservations for the national sites as early as possible.
It will be a fun trip especially since your DD wants to check it out.

Re: Washington DC
We also stayed in Dupont Circle. It's a nice, more residential neighborhood and close to the subway. I love the subways in DC- so easy to navigate! We would hop on it for a few stops and be right in the center of the city and the tourist attractions.
Definitely do the Ford Theater! It's a must. They sit you in the seats and people in period dress come on stage and tell the story of Lincoln's assassination. It was so interesting! Then they walk you across the street to the house where they brought Lincoln and where he died.
Other than that, all the museums are great- and free!
We also went to the Holocaust Museum
We saw all the monuments, the Vietnam Memorial wall, etc.
Such a great city!
ETA- the hotel we stayed at was the Hotel Madera, it's a Kimpton Hotel. They had cookies and milk in the lobby at night and wine for the adults at around 5 pm if you are around.
The only downside- very small bathroom- but otherwise a nice boutique hotel

Mt. Vernon is great - it is just over in Virginia and is definitely worth a visit.

Good luck getting tickets for the White House tour. I requested them from our local Congressman and have yet to hear back. That is apparently the only way you can get them.
