Washing the iPhone...
Not a good idea... No, but my DS thought it would be. 
Now the volume doesn't work. Anyone know how to fix? It was actually his. We gave him the 3G and just left the games and video for him. At least it wasn't ours.

Washing the iPhone...
if it just happened and it's still a bit wet, try putting it in a bowl covered in uncooked rice. The rice will absorb the wetness (from the inside too) and possibly fix things. good luck!

I have a friend who works at Apple (pretty high up), and this is what he recommends for when an iPhone gets wet:
- Turn the oven on low (125°F) and wait for the oven to come up to temperature first.
- THEN put the phone in. On something that will support it without reflecting the heat, like a bowl of uncooked rice.
- I bake ours (when the kids do this) for about 3-4 hours. (<--his words, not mine)
ETA: The sooner you can do this, the better. I don't know if it's too late or not at this point, but definitely worth a try.
