Washing baby clothes
Please excuse my naivete.
My shower is this Saturday, and I'm going to go (so long as I'm not in labor ). I want DH to wash the baby's clothes soon after because we are anticipating an early arrival, and I can't do the laundry since it's in the basement and I'm on bedrest.
Anyway, he's a little panicked that he's going to "do" something wrong. We know we should use special detergent (dye free, scent free, etc. etc. etc. like Dreft). I assume fabric softener sheets are also a no-no. I also assume that everything can be put in the dryer for the most part and that we should check the tags when in doubt.
Am I missing anything? He asked me to "research" this.
Thanks!

Re: Washing baby clothes
Non-scented detergent is fine. Nothing else is needed beyond that. I would wash very little. Just sheets and what you think the baby is going to wear coming home plus 3 sets of pj's. Wash all the sheets, a few wash cloths and towels in the same load of laundry. Wash them in cold and dry on low.
You will return a lot and will kick yourself for washing all of those clothes.

Re: Washing baby clothes
Dreft is not fragrance free. All the "baby" detergents have a lot of fragrance, actually.
We use All Free & Clear.
NO DRYER SHEETS. It can remove the flame retardant of the clothing. Not that if your baby's clothes catch on fire, there aren't other things to worry about, but I just don't use any dryer sheets anymore.
Other than that, you're golden.
ETA: Oh, I do everything on cold, delicate, and dry on low. I must do laundry 4 days a week. I also put our stuff in with the baby's stuff.
I also put in all the blankets, peed-on and pooped on stuff, and fabric covers from her various chairs/playthings, etc, in the laundry too. It all works out well.

Re: Washing baby clothes
I second the comment about Dreft - it's not fragrance free. We use Seventh Generation unscented, Ecover or Ecos.
Here is a link to SafeMama's cheat sheet on laundry detergent. They have tons of other great cheat sheets too! Safe Mama Laundry Detergent Cheat Sheet

Re: Washing baby clothes
I would also have him wash a couple of outfits in newborn and 0-3. You won't know what size your baby is until DC is here. If your DC goes straight to 0-3 you can return the newborn clothes you received.

if you shouldn't use dryer sheets, does that mean you shouldn't use liquid fabric softener either?

Yes. No "extras".

Re: Washing baby clothes
We just washed everything, everything, in tide free. We don't have many newborn sized clothes anyway - but I'd much rather have too many washed then having to scramble to cut a million tags and wash everything in an emergency. Plus it's easier to do it all at once. All the zero to 3 is washed and ready too!

Re: Washing baby clothes
We used Arm & Hammer perfume/dye free detergent and also Bounce dye free fabric softener sheets. It's what we've always used on our own clothes.
