Washing baby clothes???
Now that I have a million and a half to wash... just want to ask -
1. ONLY wash in "baby" approved detergent right? (ex - Dreft, All Free and Clear, or Tide Clear)
2. NO fabric softener?
3. NO bounce in the dryer?
and...
4. If an article of clothing has a tag on it, will you be cutting it off? Some of the t-shirts and onesies have big tags on them, they seem like they'd irritate the baby's neck... should I cut them out?

I use the Totally Toddler Dryer Sheets
I do not cut the tags off

This is just what I did, don't know if it is "right"
1. I used Purex Free and Clear to wash his 0-3 clothes. I did some 3-6 that I had too, but that is it for now.
2. No fabric softener
3. I didn't use dryer sheets, BUT my mom found ones at BRU and we've been using half a sheet in with his wash since he came home from the hospital. ETA: The Totally Toddler ones that the pp just mentioned.
4. I didn't cut any tags off, but DS's clothes are HUGE right now, so nothing is irritating his skin.

Use regular detergent and wash it with your stuff.
Personally, I think you can use any detergent. I did from day 1 and had no problems. I am a terrible mother though.
I never cut any of the tags off, they never seemed to bother him.

I kind of agree with this. Remember that the baby's face is going to up against your clothes too....
But I use Free and Clear on all of our clothes, but DH and I (and our dog) have skin allergies. I don't wash DS's clothes with ours but that is b/c DH is an EMT and god knows what comes home on his clothes after a shift.

i used the detergent that we used on our clothes. which is purex free and clear. i used normal dryer sheets as well. i never cut anything off.
Don't go crazy washing clothes until the baby is born he/she may not fit into certain things and then you can't return them.

I only used the Dreft that someone bought me at my shower. Does anyone really know that it's better than other detergents--anyone really compare "ingredients?" Do people just buy it because they think they should? I now use any Free and Clear detergent.
I don't use fabric softener and I don't think I've cut off any tags.

The reason that many peds recommend using the Dreft or other formulas specially formulated for babies is not because of the perfume/dye issue (that it what I originally thought and was planning on using our regular detergent). The baby formulas are much less harsh on the clothing and therefore do not remove the fire retardant that is on babies clothing/sheets etc. My ped recommended using the baby detergent for atleast the first year. We get the big Dreft from Costco and it is the same price as the tide that I use on my stuff.
